Florida hurricane season storage?

Does anyone have any suggestions of where on south Florida you can moor, dock, store our Hunter Passage 420 sailboat during hurricane season that would make an insurance company happy. We are traveling back to Oregon for the hurricane season.

Most insurance companies I know will want you north of 30 degrees, i.e. not in florida unless you pay a hefty premium (for mine it was about 80% more on the premium.

Indiantown Marina on the hard. My insurance dropped 20% per year vs. an in-water private berth north of Tampa (protected nicely). Expect to pay about $400/month.

Does the 30th parallel apply to Florida? I seem to remember Pantaneus (sp?) mentioning to me that they wanted the boat above the Carolinas, but I could be mistaken.

Haul it out and dry store. Worry less, your bottom wont be a forest when you return, and your Ins should be good with that. Fort Pierce, Cape Canaveral etc.

So you pay $2400 for dry storage to avoid 20% of your insurance premium?

Indiantown Marina is perhaps the best in south florida. They are located 20 miles inland and have great dry storage. They also have in water storage but when the hurricanes come and bring a lot of rain the water level will rise and in the past this has left boat owners unable to access their boats for a short time until the water level drops. The army corps of engineers controls the area for flood control so they let water levels rise behind the locks to prevent down channel flooding. To get to Indiantown from the east (Stuart Florida) you will need to go under several fixed bridges the lowest is 54 feet low water. If you come form the West (Golf of Mexico) you will need to clear a 48 foot fixed bridge.

On the hard you have many options in Florida.
Owl Creek in Ft Myers if you can fit under the bridges.
Safe Cove or Charlotte Boat Storage in Port Charlotte if you cant
Titusville Marina on East Coast

Riverside in Fort Pierce is ok for dry storage. Extra for Hurricane straps however work it.
Do it self allowed. Very rustic. Reasonable price.


Harbortown in Fort Pierce is a deluxe yard however pricey. Non do it yourself.

Green Cove Springs offers two choices. GCS Marina and Reynolds boat yard. Both dry land storage and good value. Just five days extra up and down the ICw. GCS is a do it yourself yard. Very very rustic. 15 miles south of Jacksonville on the St John’s River.
