Looking to sail from east coast of florida to u.s. virgin islands. If anyone has made this trip, any routes or tips would be welcome and appreciated.

Get and read The Gentleman's Guide to Passages South, by Bruce Van Sant.

https://www.amazon.com/Gentlemans-Gu.../dp/0944428797

This trip is not nearly as easy as it might seem, if you have only looked at a map. You are going directly into the prevailing winds and currents for most of the way.

Good luck.

You often get 3+ day windows of S'lies.. grab one of these and run N and over the top of the Bahama's then play the N'ly and S'ly winds Eastwards till you can hang a right down to the BVI's/USVI's.. its a 6-10 day trip.. depending on the size and capabilities of your boat.. and you..

Re: U.S. virgin islands

I'm with Phil on this one. Grab the back side of a front, or wait for a calm and go straight E. Listen to Cornell's guidance, stay above 25N until you get to the longitude of the islands and then turn S.

It took us 11 days on our previous boat, a heavy steel beast. We had a lot of calms and upwind work.

Following the islands down is a MUCH tougher way to go.

This assumes that you and your boat are up to the passage, of course.

Ah... Well... Yes, of course. But... only once you've managed to get yourself there (to the VI) to begin with, No?

Sailing back to the states from the Eastern Caribbean is far easier than going the other way. As mentioned, going to the east you are heading directly into the prevailing winds and currents. Coming back, obviously, the prevailing winds and currents are helping you along.
