Novice WP5000 Autopilot

I bought this by mistake on eBay.
Does NOT include Control unit.
Includes:-
HP5000 Hand Programmer
Wheel Drum but no U bolts to connect to wheel.
Drive Unit with clutch.
Two belts.
Three key control pad.
Header should read Navico WP5000 Autopilot

I was told it was working when removed from boat but I can't confirm as no Control Unit.

Location: Sydney, Australia.

Price: Negotiable

Re: Novice WP5000 Autopilot

Sure you do not have everything? There is a drive motor and a box, kind of trapezoidal with the three buttons, no other control unit... unlike some newer units, the compass and brain is built into the 3 key box. Post a pic, I bet your unit is OK.

BTW, I would be interested in the HP5000 part

Re: Novice WP5000 Autopilot

Thanks for replies.
My user manual specifically talks about separate control unit & it's location. I think my Navico is mid 1990 vintage.
The 3 button controller is same as photo posted by Captjcook but mine says Navico, not Simrad.
I would be happy to give HP5000 programmer away once I get Control unit or alternatively sell all my bits to someone who already has Control Unit.

Re: Novice WP5000 Autopilot

Simrad and Navico are identical
That's all there is, the little 3 key box and the motor
the 3 key box IS the control

Re: Novice WP5000 Autopilot

I think Sanibel and I are in complete agreement...you have all you need except u-bolts and plastic adaptor bushings for u-bolt/spokes...plastic pieces not a show stopper. I am not interested in hp5000 programmer, go for it Sanibel, if you want it...cheers!

Re: Novice WP5000 Autopilot

I have the u-bolts and plastic adapter bits too...postage to OZ more than value of bits, me guess...when he could put a small length of plastic tubing over u-bolt and be done...

Re: Novice WP5000 Autopilot

I am not worried about U bolts & plastic bits.
My only concern was for the Control Unit. Beautiful morning here in Oz. i am heading out to patch WP5000 into car battery to test if 3 button box includes fluxgate. I'll let you know. I must have wrong User Manual, although it did seem to be accurate when describing drive motor, belt & wheel ring.
Thanks

Re: Novice WP5000 Autopilot

I dug out my manual...inasmuch as there are "optional" devices, windvane, handheld, remote displays all running through JB5000 junction box...you have the basic system, all I have too! Works just fine! Maybe it was not a mistake after all! I am happy to help further if you need, just pm..

Re: Novice WP5000 Autopilot

I've had 3 WP5000s over the years. All the brains are in the 3 button controller, including the fluxgate compass. Looks like you have the necessary parts, although you didn't mention if you had a base mount for the clutch and motor. Also the controller has a small plastic wedge mount and there should be an electrical socket for the controller to plug into. My only problem with the Navico WP was the tiny size of the attachment points for the power cables. Had to use a small wire size for the connection and then attach to a larger wire for the trip to the batteries. Most users of this wheel pilot will take an old belt and glue it to the inside of the wheel so the belt won't slip.

Thumbs up Re: Novice WP5000 Autopilot

Hi Captjcook (any relation)
I have just tested wp5000 connected to car battery & all seems to work fine. I can't believe I could have made that error with the User Manual.
It does say to mount Control a metre away from steering compass. How critical is that? I would like to mount it on the pedestal near the compass.
Thanks for everybody's input.
cheers & happy sailing.

Re: Novice WP5000 Autopilot

Hi Misssherry
Thanks to my fellow sailers, my problem has been solved. See previous post.
I don't have the small plastic wedge mount or socket. I'll have to improvise somehow.
I do have the pedestal mount.
thanks
