Best watermaker for a Catamaran

Hi all, I am taking delivery soon of a new Leopard 45 Catamaran. I wanted to get some feedback regarding the most economical, reliable and productive water maker to purchase. I will have a generator so do not mind getting an AC system to can make water faster. I have been looking at the "Cruise RO" AC systems that makes 33 to 43gph. All feedback appreciated for this soon to be new Catamaran owner! Thanks.

Wow just checked it out online, cool. How many gallons per hour can you make on AC and how many on DC?

A very reliable brand is Echotec. Seriously well made.

The best watermakers are Spectra. The only downside is the price...

Re: Best watermaker for a Catamaran

horses for courses---

I find the decision driver to be how do you plan to use your genset?
If you plan to use your genset every few days (charge batteries, make hot water...) then get an AC powered WM, and make lots of water at the same time. A diesel genset likes the bigger load. you can always use the extra water to clean the boat. I have an inverter (and lithium batts) and can run my 1.5 hp wm off my inverter as a back up (just as Rich at RO suggested)

If you prefer not to run the genset, well, spectra seems to most efficient 12v unit per AH, but you pay in $$$s upfront. And a 12v system costs in terms of battery charging time, and in turn maybe battery life. (Do those LA batts ever get a FULL charge when on the hook???)

Remember, aside from spectra's 12v pump most of these components are (or should be) stock industrial parts---e.g. Desalator used a stock CAT pump in my unit (its 10 years old). i got replacement parts from Cruisero, or mcmaster carr....

FWIW i converted the WM on my new to me lagoon from a 12v to AC and could not be happier. YMMV. Good luck.
Cheers,
John

Re: Best watermaker for a Catamaran

A lot of cruisers prefer DC water-makers because you will have 3 ways to provide DC (gen, solar, engine) and only 1, or possibly 2 ways to provide AC.

Re: Best watermaker for a Catamaran

We bought a Rainman for our Catamaran. Very happy with the product and the service. It produces between 110-120L/hour down here in the Caribbean.

Plus it had the best price of all the watermakers I looked at!

Another vote for EchoTech. I have one in my Morgan 461. Never had a problem. I had the opportunity to meet the owner about a year ago. Smart guy, good philosophy on keeping it simple.
