1979 Morgan North American 40'

I have looked and looked for info on the Morgan North American 40'. I am looking to buy a boat that will be geared to sailing anywhere in the world. This boat is listed as a racer/ crusier. The price is around 40k and it is in good condition. So can anyone help with advice on her. Thank You very much.

Short answer - Don't?

At this stage in your inquiries I'd strongly recommend not buying anything.

40' cruising yachts have many parts and systems. At $40k it's likely an old boat so those parts and systems are most likely old or repaired/upgraded/fixed/etc.

Untill you can make an informed judgement as to whether a boat is suitable for your needs I recommend not buying, or even getting a survey.

Do think carefully about your plans and the education, training and experience that you'll need to follow them.

There is much useful information in this Forum and we welcome your questions.

Greetings and welcom aboard the CF, owd.

The NA 40 was a fast IOR boat designed by naval architect Richard Carter, and built between1978 - 81 by Morgan Yachts in Largo Florida.
Although they have made multiple Pacific crossings (at least to Hawaii), I’d heed Boracay’s cautionary advice.

Boracay and Gordmay

Morning

Thank you both for your reply. I am in the military and will retire soon. Have been sailing a 30 foot sloop for quite awhile and will be heading to the far east down the road. My bigest thing is I do not want to continue to put money and time in the 30 when I know that is is a little to small for me. The 40 has a great survey and all systems a go. Of course I will add some additional gear. The issue is the way the boat sails being a racer and I need a cruiser. Thank you again.

Re: 1979 Morgan North American 40'

Did you buy this boat? I have been sailing on Lake Ontario with my O'Day 30 and decided to upgrade. I am planning to buy a 1978 Morgan NA 40 and to sail up and down on the east cost (Canada to Florida) including Caribbean in short term and maybe more extended sailing across the Atlantic in long term. I would appreciate any feedback on this boat as I couldn't find much about them.

Thanks in advance.
