Catarmaran sailing Australia to New Zealand

I am planning a trip and would like advise on sailing a cat from the east coast of Australia to New Zealand. It sounds like the winds tend to be unfavourable in Summer but heavy and uncomfortable in Winter.

We hope to leave from Queensland / Coff Harbour but I have been told that this may not be the best idea due to contrary winds.

I have also been told that it is possible to leave from Eden to NZ during summer and a westerly breeze can be expected but that involves dealing with roaring forty type winds and seas. It also means sailing further south then we would need to as I would to aiming for Opua.

Has anyone crossed the Tasman in a Cat. There seems to be little information on the internet regarding this and I wonder whether it is for a good reason.

Some good videos from Impi but I don't believe they have traveled eastward along the routes suggested. Could be wrong through.

We hope to leave from Queensland / Coff Harbour

Coffs Harbour is probably a place to stay away from after the last few days. Will take a long time to get that fixed.

Re: Catarmaran sailing Australia to New Zealand

Hi there,

we did this trip in December 2015 on an FP Lavezzi 40. Details of the trip

Departure: 0710 Sunday 29/11/2015 Coffs Harbour
Arrival: 1037 Tuesday 1/12/2015 Lord Howe Island
Total: 2 Days 3 hrs

Departure: 1115 Friday 4/12/2015 Lord Howe Island
Arrival: 0920 Thursday 10/12/2015
Total: 5 days 21 hrs

Total Distance: 1188 NM
Engine Hours Total: P+S 83.9 hrs

If you are interested we put together a brief passage plan for the trip which I have attached

Also some pics from the trip
Coffs to Lord Howe https://flic.kr/s/aHskr2KFYL
Lord Howe to Opua https://flic.kr/s/aHskr8CGsi

Overall the trip was great. We used Predict Wind for routing which worked well after fine tuning the polars for the weighted down Lavezzi. It was lumpy in parts but hey its the Tasman. Very much recommend taking the option of a "tech stop" at Lord Howe Island.

Also we were lucky that we got to sail straight through the middle of the Three Kings. Beam Reaching and eating freshly caught Tuna across the top of the North Island between Cape Reinga and North Cape was a highlight

Cheers

Yes.

Is Reflections a LW45 perchance?

We transited Hobart Opua in March.

Check out the pilot charts for your chosen route.

Not sure I would want to leave from as far north as Coffs.

Many have successfully though.

Summer brings the tailends of tropical lows.

Newcastle is a good jumping off point for this trip. If you decide to stop at Lord Howe - and I'd recommend it - be sure to book a mooring before leaving Australia.

Very much enjoyed the photos using the links. Thanks sincerely.

Would also like to see the passage plan but I can't find the attachment against your post.
Also what did you mean by a 'tech' stop off?
Did you sail past/stop at Balls Pyramid the island south east of Lord Hose?

Someone else mentioned the need to book a mooring. Is that because anchoring is ill advised?

In summer you have the possibility of tropical revolving storms. Cruising vessels generally depart from NZ between May & Sept but of course there are exceptions.

1. Looks like the passage plan was bumped due to size (6MB), Here's a link to it

https://www.dropbox.com/s/4c0pzkepyw...acted.pdf?dl=0

2. Once you have cleared Australia you are supposed to proceed directly to your next port. Unfortunately you can no longer clear from LHI however there is a carve out that allows LHI to be used as a tech stop (refuelling, provisioning) but there can be no change of crew i.e. you can't drop someone off there or pick anyone up

Ports of entry New South Wales

3. We did a bit of detour after departing LHI and got within about 5 NM of Balls Pyramid however it was pretty lumpy and on the nose so we took some photos and then cracked off for NZ (it is the first two photos in the 2nd link).

GPX files here that show our route and the suggested predict wind routes along the way

https://www.dropbox.com/s/p8x1dl8s0s...racks.gpx?dl=0

4.Anchoring in the lagoon is prohibited so you need to apply to the Lord Howe Island Board for a mooring

cheers

Re: Catarmaran sailing Australia to New Zealand

We sailed in February from Hobart to Nelson but did lots of motoring due to light winds. Friends sailed their Seawind from Eden to Opua and had a great sail but a little later, March maybe.

Re: Catarmaran sailing Australia to New Zealand

Love to do this trip one day. I'd heard of a boat doing the Aus. NZ trip via Lord Howe and Norfolk Island. I understand there is no harbour at Norfolk but it would be interesting. What do you all think?
