I'm heading out... St Martin to New York

Leaving in the next few days so just doing the last few things... And checking the weather.

Fractionally nervy about this passage because it can get nasty as we have seen from the Azores boats.

Its a straight shot and should take me east of the Bahamas by 600nms, east of Hatteras by 200, and west of Bermuda by 100.
1,500 nms total.

So I expect a beer from NY members when I get there

It will be great to get to sea!

Mark

Safe passage, Mark!

I guess one can only enjoy warm weather, sand, and palm trees for so long?

Well if instead of bailing out so soon and you make it to the Boston area I know beer places withing 5 meters (metric so would understand) of the dinghy dock.

Re: I'm heading out... St Martin to New York

But why?

We were there last summer: The water is shallow, bumpy, brown and COLD - I mean colder than Tassie's! - and after getting there (the easy bit) you've got to get back again. We met dozens of 'murican yotties who almost invariably enquired: "Wow, you crossed the ocean from England? That must be hard/scary/dangerous?" What was the worst part?" Our answer never varied: The US east coast, most especially the ICW - now that's really scary!

Then again, we're heading back there ourselves in a few weeks, so how dumb does that make me?

Hey Mark - we're only a couple of miles apart now but my next passage is going to be to the BVI, and at a mere 90 miles it is only 16.6% of what you are about to embark on. I haven't looked at the big picture, which will invariably change while you are underway, but the Caribbean forecast looks typical with 15 knots from the east with a tinge of southerly component for the next couple of days. I wish you fair seas and following winds (hmm, or was that supposed to go the other way around). I trust you don't believe in that old superstition about leaving on a Friday.

Satellite data connection for the first time. I have had sat phone before but not the data connection. I am looking forward to using it and see how good it is.

Someone said "why" go to New York. Well, everyone's idea of exotic is different. Some imagine the South Sea Isles, some Asia, the Caribbean etc, but I love big cities and this is the cheapest way to stay there for long enough to have a good look. I was there fir three months two years ago and relish the idea of getting back there Lots of entertainment and culture thats just not in the normal cruising areas

Safe journey.

And enjoy being one of "eight million stories" when you get there.

Re: I'm heading out... St Martin to New York

Sounds good Mark. One problem with sat data is it's hard to test it too much before departure, unless it's an unlimited go type plan. I've come across more than a few people that have saved their minutes and not found that things don't work so well till they're 'out there'
Hopefully yours is sorted. A good backup plan is to have someone shoreside to be able to assist if the weather data won't come through. Then you can call, email or SMS from the sat phone which is less vulnerable to glitches. Personally I'd like to have a 10 day grib forecast before departure for both parties and if anything changes dramatically en route it can be discussed easily, I.e ' no problem mate, grib hasn't changed from original forecast'
Before departure have all the mailasail synoptic charts and text forecast request email sorted.
Let us know if you need anything, drop us a mail from your satphone email address if you like and we can keep an eye out for you en route. Sephina3228 At gmail
We also have all local emergency SAR numbers preprogrammed in the sat phone, just in case...

Enjoy the passage matey, and say "Hi" to lovely St. Georges for me when you stop off there. And… if you get bored of the city life and fancy some further "exotic", consider the Bras D'Or in Cape Breton. A more beautiful place in that area of the world you would struggle to find.

Re: I'm heading out... St Martin to New York

I just did nearly the same passage (USVI to RI) two weeks ago. You may want to go slightly east of the thumb line in case you want to divert to Bermuda. It doesn't add a lot of miles, but can make it easier to change crew (I had one I wanted off!), or take on fuel or provisions.

Fair winds!

79st boat basin again? We were thinking of running up there for hurricane season too. Nothing like a 5 minute walk to Central Park from your $40 a night mooring ball!

We didn't use the data much on our sat phone. It was much easier to just have someone SMS us a synopsis of the weather everyday.
