NSW > New Zealand. Advice for first timer.

Planning trip to NZ in October 2018 NSW to Opua. Does anyone have advice for this?

Working on the list of jobs now inc Aust Reg ship, life raft, sat phone, insurance, survey etc.

This will be a bumpy journey if you have late spring storms next year like we've had this year.

I have been told that March is the most settled time of year for that trip. Leave from as far north as possible and sail the rhumb line.. Expect two frontal passages, though you may not actually have that many. Choice of weather window for the trip is important.

We made the trip once, from Brisbane to Bay of Islands, on a mono with a 29 ft. waterline. Got the two fronts, but we actually lost ground trying to stay in the EAC. Friends with a faster boat also copped the two fronts, but arrived a day earlier than we, partly because they sailed the rhumb line.
