Christchurch New Zealand

Hello all,

Will be relocating to Christchurch soon. Any knowledge out there on sailing clubs/opportunities? Clubs to join? Liveaboard?

Any info would be appreciated.

Cheers

Re: Christchurch New Zealand

Check your map of the South Island. I believe Christchurch is landlocked.

There's plenty of yachting around Marlborough Sounds, Lyttleton, Dunedin. A long way from Christchurch for weekend sailing.

Re: Christchurch New Zealand

As well as the Christchurch estuary (which hosts* a few dinghy clubs) Christchurch has a harbor, Lyttelton, the keelboats race out of Naval Point Club where there is(was) also a marina*, no idea if liveaboards are still allowed. Otherwise quite a few boats are moored in Diamond harbor or Purau bay, on the far side of Lyttelton. Akaroa harbour is also very nice, but a bit far to commute to Christchurch every day.

*I've only been back briefly since the 2011 earthquake, so I don't know which have closed and which were rebuilt, but the marina was badly damaged.

.
Not landlocked. The beach at New Brighton is less than 10km from Christchurch city centre.

Lyttleton Harbour is only 20 minutes drive from the city centre.

And it's less than 50 NM all the way round the peninsula from Lyttleton to Akaroa - with lots of bays on the way (most of them also accessible by road).

Bingo! Thank you Stu. I was making a stupid mistake, I was visualizing Queenstown. My bad.

I spent a year fishing out of Lyttelton harbour on a trawler in the eightys great harbour for sailing out of usually plenty of breeze. And its not far to the Malborough Sounds one of the great cruising grounds. Not sure about the clubs some got hammered in the earthquake.

Re: Christchurch New Zealand

Hey, I lived in CHCh for 10 years. There is small boat sailing and some boring fishing to be done in the Littleton harbour. There are no islands or anywhere to go outside of the harbour it's all exposed. The north island is far superior for boating and if you love the water like I do, South Island swimming is no good...so cold! Sorry if that disappoints! It's the main reason I left the city. Best to ski, eat great food and mountain bike in ChCh

Re: Christchurch New Zealand

There is some excellent boating to be had around the Banks Peninsula: But to keep your enthusiasm up over an extended period you either need a boat capable of being trailered by road or coastal capable.. Where are you arriving to ChCh from?

You could try this group:

General - Crew.org.nz

which is NZ based with the same question. I know there are quite a few people from ChCh or down that way are members. And everyone will have an opinion they would like to share
