Re: 2017 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race

We nipped out via Botany to see the boats, Black Jack stuck VERY closely to the land. We and a few others found ourselves between Wild Oats and Comanche to Starboard and Black Jack to port.

Really lovely arvo.

Wishing you all a fantastic Boxing Day!

Comanche has protested the barge at the start. Still doesn't take away from Wild Oats nipping past in the Derwent estuary.

One hour penalty, Comanche wins. Have to admit I didn't see that coming!

Re: 2017 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race

My, that's gonna cause some hard feelings. Gotta feel sympathy for both sides, but IMO throwing 100 foot 25 knot yachts at each other like dinghies is a bad show.

And of course, the foul had little effect on the placement of either yacht at the end.

Bummer for everyone involved. WO isn't the winner, and Comanche will be viewed as having "stolen"the victory on a technicality.

Sad.

Jim

PS Further reading of the decision seems to say that if WO had just done their two penalty turns at the time there would have been no time penalty. If that 's so, someone made a really bad decision on board WO.

I am pleased to see that justice has been served, Oats did the wrong thing - they could have been sportsmanlike about it and done the turns, but they rolled the dice, more fool them

Re: 2017 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race

I'm not surprised. They were up for a DQ or a time penalty based on my interpretation of the video. WO misjudged and left the lee bow tack a couple of seconds too late.

Given the time and distance involved in the race, I'd have taken the two turn penalty at the time. The chances on the lost time making a difference at the end of the race would have been fairly remote.

I gotta concur. They rolled the twice twice - once with the late tack - fair enough, it was worth the gamble but then rolled it again by not taking the turns.

I suggest the arbitrators decided to "throw the book at them" for failing to accept that they messed up right back at that tack.

Re: 2017 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race

Two questions for ocean racers:

In such an ocean race - as opposed to the windward leg of a round the buoys race - what are the odds that lee bowing could be sustainec for long and would be able to generate a lead of 26 minutes anyway?

Given that WO's lee-bowing attempt was done when and where it was - in view of cameras in contrast to some few hours later - what are the odds that the helmsman chose to do it to show (to the owner of WO? To prosoective employers?) just to demonstrate that he (the helm) was an aggressive player worthy of being hired?
