Cheap sails

Hello,

I am in the market for a cheap set of sails for my trawler. These will serve as "get home" sails in the event of an engine/prop failure off shore. Since they won't be used much, and will only be used on reach to run points of sail I am more interested in robust sails for the least amount of money than performance sails. Any suggestions? Last time I was in the market, Lee Sails out of Hong Kong was an option, but I have no clue what knowledgeable folks would now recommend.

Thanks!

Re: Cheap sails

You might well consider a used sail broker, such as Bacon in Annapolis. They have a huge stock of used and new but unused sails, and at far lower prices than even the Oriental lofts. I fund them to be quite honest in descriptions of their sails, and they have a return policy.

Seems kinda a waste of money to buy new for your proposed usage.

That's a great idea, Jim. Thank you, I'll check with them, but do you know of a West Coast equivalent to Bacon?

I believe that there are similar outfits, but I never dealt with them, and really, we left SF in 1986 so my knowldege is a bit dated!! Might check in Lat 38 or google.

I bought several sails from Bacon way back when, and always was happy with the process. I'd think that anyone in that business would follow Bacon's model with very conservative ratings on sail condition. One pissed off customer can cause big waves these days, and smart vendors know that!

Good luck with the search.

Jim

Re: Cheap sails

For new, you can get a quote from Rolly Tasker in Thailand. They did great work on mine at a very reasonable price.

Re: Cheap sails

Also, for new, Precision Sails has a page for seconds and returns--very nice.

Second Bacon Sails--they've got all their inventory online.
