Buccaneer 33 Restoration

After 10 solid days of brutal work, my brother and I were able to get the boat home to Texas from Florida. 1200 miles. The amas were virtually impossible to demount from the akas. It was more work than expected and the town where it was located was almost impossible to find anything we needed.

No troubles with DOT or anything in any of the 6 states. 124" width. Well over the 102" limit in most states but it did not look over width on the trailer. The narrow lower hull and taper of the amas hid the true width.

The haul went extremely smooth and it trailered surprisingly stable. We did have a wheel bearing failure at about 900 miles that we expected after noticing heat at the hub after only 50 miles. We were fortunate to be expecting it and watch as it happened. No other damage was caused and the Autozone a few miles away had all the parts in stock.

Total truck, trailer and boat weight, including all the tools and equipment for the move, weighed 14720. I was kinda shocked by that. Truck weighs 5700 by itself. The next time I move it, I will definitely move it with the amas and akas assembled on a seperate trailer with the mast. I could have saved a few days if I knew this when I moved it the first time.

Ratchet straps, concrete/wood blocks, 2x4s and 2 spare tire jacks were all that we used to put it on the trailer. Took 5 men to put the fully dressed mast through the pilot house without damaging anything.

Looks like an awesome boat to restore.

I have made no headway on the restoration. I have been busy buying land, building a house, building a family, and building a business that I will be able to operate from aboard. My first child was 8 weeks old when I moved the boat and I'll have my third child in about 8 weeks. My plan is to have everything paid off and be living aboard a fully restored Bucc33 by the time my 3rd child is big enough for a crossing. We will see how it goes. Just turned 36 and a really hard early life of extreme manual labor and injuries is catching up to me. My knees and back are REALLY slowing me down.

Re: Buccaneer 33 Restoration

Thanks for the reply
Sounds like you have been very busy actually you describe a very similar situation to us when we built the boat it actually took 24 years to complete hence the name Festino Lente. ( Latin for “ I make haste slowly “)
This is a comment on her build time.
I have attached a few more images one taken before we took her out of the water for the re-fit
Will replace all standing rigging running rigging, winches hatches windows and engine, have settled for a 25 beta to replace the original bukh 10
Anyway hope this helps re-invigorate
By the way what part of the world do you reside in I am quite interested to see how far afield this design made it from Australia we are based in NZ
Kind Regards
Mark

There's a few Bucs in the states on both coasts. I had one near Seattle.
