Sailing Condo Getaway

Seeking some feedback. My friend and are considering purchase of a cruising monohull as a winter getaway, floating condo with built in sailing adventure. We are experienced sailing, one charetering and myself owning a small cruiser on Lake Erie. Option is chartering but seems pricey for a month at a time versus purchasing. Would pay for purchase after Jesuit a few years. We are looking at 38 to 40 +- footer. Florida or other warm port. Any and all feedback welcome

Re: Sailing Condo Getaway

All depends on how much use the boat will get.

At 1 month use per year, chartering will likely be cheaper once you account for slip fees, haul outs, bottom paint, engine repairs and the fact that you will probably eat up at least 1 week of that month working on the boat.

With a charter boat, you bring you bags and food and it's someone else's problem when your month is done.

On the other hand, if you will be spending 6 months per year, the costs of buying are almost unchanged but the charter boat will be 5-6times as expensive.
