98’ steel rob Ladd project boat

I just saw this boat when we brought in our Hinkley to be sold. The yard let me walk through it. Apparently she has been sitting on the hard in the same spot for over a decade now, untouched. There are some rust spots including a hole on one side of the boat. The deck is teak over plywood and all needs to be replaced. The boat is pretty bad, but if someone could return her to her former glory, then WOW what a sailboat! I’ve refit a 50’ fiberglass boat. Could this be that much worse? The yard said there has been zero interest and $50k would probably buy her. What do you guys think? Is she worth anything? Or run run run?!

Buy it for buttons and scrap it selling off the hardware. Probably take a year to do but make an interesting project.

The refit costs would likely be more than a new one if you tried to fix it up and you would still have an old boat.

Sheesh! If they gave you 50 K you might break even scrapping and parting it out.

It is always sad to see a once proud yacht composting, but really, if there were true value there it would not be languishing. Plenty of clued up guys wandering the waterfront, and no one nibbling. Might be a clue !

It looks like they could not be bothered grinding the welds flush below the waterline? She sounds well used so I imagine all that equipment is probably needing rebuilt as well........

Run Forrest Run......doing the work yourself could run another decade, and still the costs might run into a half million to do. Paying the yard would run a whole lot more...

OK, so you buy it, put $1,000,000 into it and have a fantastic yacht. What then? You need a professional crew of at least six and a place to dock it. Going for a sail involves instructing the crew to get under way while you just sit there and relax - lord of the manor.

Not my cup of tea.

I saw a 70' wooden sail boat at the Georgetown SC Wooden Boat Show some years back which was being reconditioned by a multi-millionaire. He was doing the job himself with the help of a friend. He did not seem overly concerned with the project.

If it flirts, flies or floats, we probably can't afford it--but we get involved anyway--

But this one is a losing proposition from my limited experience in neglected vessels.

It may also owe a lot of money--which as the new owner becomes your problem.

Run. I own a steel boat. If you are the da Vinci of welder/fabricators and own a 60 foot shed, a private income, and are 35 years old, offer $10K and spend the next five years unbuggering it. Otherwise, run.

It would definitely take a lot of money and labor to bring her back. You guys who own steel boats, are the rusty areas that big of a deal? With the rust hole in the side of the boat can you just cut out the old metal and weld in new?

Welding in hull patches is fine if one doesn't mind tearing out the interior. The thing that normally reduces starry eyed dreamers to tears is the more than likely associated mess in the (usually) inaccessible bilges (see image).
