Bavaria 38 sailboat rudder fall off while sailing south coast

Dear members,

we were making boat delivery Bavaria 38 in the south coast of England half way on the journey the rider just sniped and fall off and the boat was uncontrollable going circle than we manged to drop jib and main and controlled than we have been rescued by the coastguards. Is this normal for the boat that size the rider to fall off just like that with out any stress on the rider or sign off stress on the string.

It has been out of the water for bottom paint not to long ago.

I am very surprised and angry any through ?

What was the weather at the time the rudder was lost?
How old was the boat?
It could have been fatigue, or manufacturer's defect, or latent damage from a grounding or some of all of these.

she is 15 years old maintained by yachts charting company. The sea was not riff their was a sea swell not unmanageable very beautiful day wind 10-14 we were doing almost 7-9 knot wind behind as.

Strange story... I live in the UK, I have not heard anything about this in the sailing news. Nothing on the YBW forum, nothing on the coastguard (RNLI) news feed either.
