Small Powerboat to cruise canals and rivers of Europe

Hello,

My girlfriend and I are seriously considering buying a used 28 - 35 foot powerboat/cruiser in Europe and use it to cruise the canals and rivers there for a few years.

Does anyone on the forum have experience with this? I'd like to know about general costs, paperwork between countries, best routes, what to avoid, etc.

Ideally, we'd like to buy something that is mechanically sound, but needs some cosmetic work, which we would do along the way in hopes of recouping our investment when we are done.

Have you looked into the wide body (12 feet) Dutch barges for the Euro Canals. Start with Google lots of info on all of your questions.

Some friends did 3 years in the canals then came out at Marseilles and pottered along the coast of France and Spain for a while on one of these.. reckoned they had a great time.
