New England Layup

Hi All!

Long time reader new poster!

My wife and I are coastal cruising from Halifax Nova Scotia to warmer weather. (Florida, Bahamas ??). The admiral is deserting me from mid September to mid October so I will have to lay up for a month.

Looking for a reasonably priced slip for a 1 month rental somewhere between Portland Maine and Rhode Island.

Suggestions?

Burt

Re: New England Layup

I would try to get to chesapeake bay. A favorable weather window in mid october is a cold north wind. Last time i went south from boston the best window was 28 deg f nw 25 knots. Im glad it wasnt ne by then.that was oct 14.

Re: New England Layup

Wish that I could.

We have been laying low in Yarmouth NS waiting for Hermine to clear away so New Bedford is likely as far as we can get until the Admiral jumps ship.

Also my insurance will only cover me for named storms north of the 40th until Hurricane season ends. Looking at NOAA I see 3 more systems spinning up ..... think I will wait till things settle down before I pass Jersey.

Still looking for suggestions for an economical marina to lay up for a month (somewhere between Portland Me and New Bedford Ma)

Thanks

Burt

Look into Penobscot Bay area - a bit north of what you specified but beautiful sailing to be had.

Burt, By my standards the New England marinas are on the expensive side, but when I consider the geographic range that you've identified, I would look at Onset, Massachusetts.

Just on the south side of the Cape Cod Canal, you'll find Onset has a couple of marinas and a very good protected anchorage. The small town has convenient, grocery, pharmacy, post office, library, & restaurants a short walk from the town dinghy dock.

The current can be swift at the well-marked entry channel and there's usually a need to do some "crabbing" and watch your leeway, but once inside it is very peaceful.
