Ah, mate, the poor bloke must have fallen asleep, he should have been tacked out on the offshore tack to clear the cape. What a sad picture! The boat looks so good, all the holes on the underneath. :-(

Ironically, it looks warm there, odd for this time of year, beautiful weather.

The sailboat, named the Lieveling, was drifting toward rocks 209 miles north of Kodiak, according to the Coast Guard's 17th District.

After the sailor on board called for help, the Coast Guard sent the cutter Mustang and a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew. The Jayhawk's aircrew landed on a nearby beach and got the person piloting the Lieveling to safety with no medical concerns, officials said.

“It is important to have a form of communication while on the water in case of emergency,” said Lt. j.g. Dan Hendricks, a Coast Guard 17th District watchstander. “Other safety measures include filing a float plan, maintaining cold-weather gear and having a registered emergency position indicating radio beacon.”

The Coast Guard reported that there were 2-foot waves and clear skies during the rescue operation.

Odd that the CG didn't mention an anchor in their list of safety gear.

I don't know the area, so maybe that wouldn't have helped. But at one point he was "drifting toward the rocks" in what sounds like fairly calm conditions.

Maybe the anchor didn't catch, or maybe the water was too deep. Anybody have more info?

This caught my eye, cause a buddy is up that way and we haven't heard from him since Oct.

Not my buddies boat, but this is first I heard of this. Always hate to see any boat on the rocks.

Medical, asleep, or the pics show a low tide at that time. Look at high water mark.

I'm not an expert but the currents down here in my parts can throw a boat around in a heartbeat to the extent that even your engine won't get you out of trouble. You then become an accident..........waiting to happen.

That area I'm not familiar with.

He may have been in the wrong place at the wrong time?

Never a bad time to be sailing, anywhere.

Just be aware of the weather, we say if you don't like it, wait 10 minutes..it will change.

Yes, is warm these past years.

hmmmmm?? I'm curious, foresail's up, main down. Was motoring if you ask me.

But then again, assuming gets us no where.

Sad to see a persons life on the rocks like that. hope all is well.

Not motorsailing, perhaps, but just ghosting along under headsail alone. Possibly slowing the boat down to arrive at the Cape with a tidal advantage.

I know the boat very well. Has been for sale and not sailed for several years. Total disarray might describe the way it has been docked right by us the last two years. I'd rather not say much more but there's much more to this story than what is being released to the press so far.
