In the fastest ever
Sydney to Hobart that saw the
race record smashed by Perpetual LOYAL which also came 2nd on IRC and the
Volvo 70 Giacomo winning, the
84 year old 9m long, gaff rigged Maluka of Kermandie came 14th on IRC and won division 4.
During the
race she recorded 240nm in 24hrs and hit over 13 knots at one point. She has recorded in the past 17.9 knots (not in this race)
Normally in the S2H, the small and older boats tend to do better on handicap during slow races, not fast races like this year.
I had thought that if I was to setup my
boat for
racing, then I should be able to cross the line in front of the old small boats like Maluka, but now I doubt it.
The speed of Maluka has me shocked......
