Catalina 387

Hi All
I’m tossing around the idea of moving up from my Cavalier 32 to something I can stand in. Being 6’6” is no picnic as a sailor.
I mostly singlehand and I have my Cav32 set up perfectly for me. But, and it’s a big but, I can only stand up in 2 places inside!
It’s really a daysailor for me, a great one though.
I went onboard a Catalina 387 and it was as though they had designed it around me. Several inches of room above my head everywhere in the saloon and galley, and a bed in the aft cabin that is 8’ long! Amazing
All the ones for sale in Oz have the winged keel shoal draft. It just doesn’t look right to this old fella. I don’t need a shallow draft yacht, plenty of deep water here.
Should I wait till a fin keel appear on the market?
Or is the wing keel version still a good sail

Cheers
Bruce

Re: Catalina 387

The wing keel on that model doesn't seem to hurt performance that much based on the PHRF ratings ( smaller number is faster)

Not sure where you are in Australia, but there's a fair number areas on the east coast that a shallower draft makes life easier.

Re: Catalina 387

Almost all Catalinas with wing keels have been reported to lose perhaps 6 degrees when beating to windward compared to a fin keel of their same model. I've been "into" Catalinas since 1983. The 387 is a fine boat, Built in the period after the mid-sized Catalinas from the 1980s vintage and their late 90's Mark II versions began to be replaced, leading years later to the newer 5 Series boats.
