So update: if anyone is close by citrus isle and can stop by or call with some pointers to get out of the new river we would greatly appreciate it. Also we would be able to pay a crew person to help as well . PM us if you can make it over tomorrow. Thanks everyone.

I'm not in town or I would be glad to give you a hand. You should time it so you are going against the tide, so you want an incoming tide. It is much easier to control your boat if you have to wait at a bridge. Also be aware the bridges don't open during rush hour. Be sure and monitor channels 16 and 13 for commercial traffic such as big yachts or the Jungle Queen tour boat coming up the river.
Good luck

Re: Crew wanted Asap

I dock my boat on the end of Citrus Isle, but unfortunately I'm headed up to Atlanta for the weekend. If your plans change, I'll be back late Monday.

In the meantime, it's pretty straightforward to get down the river. I'd recommend doing it with an incoming tide, so that the flow is against you. This gives you much better maneuverability as you have flow over the rudder even when moving very slow waiting for the bridges to open. Once you get close to the bridge, hail them in Channel 9, and request an opening. They open in demand, so you usually don't have much of a wait. You'll have to go through 4 bridges to get to the ICW - Davie Blvd, 7th Avenue, Andrews Avenue and 3rd Avenue. Be careful after going through Andrews as there is an outflow station on the north bank that periodically opens and you can get a strong push towards the south bank - if you're unprepared it can get exciting. Once you get to the ICW head south under the 17th Street bridge and hang a left out the inlet. If your mast is more than 55 feet off the water you will need to ask the 17th Street bridge for an opening too, they open on the half hour as long as you've requested an opening.

Along the way be sure to monitor VHF channel 9 for securitee announcements that alert you to big boats or boats under tow transiting the river.

I'll PM you with my cell number, and will be happy to help over the phone.

Regards,
David

Re: Crew wanted Asap

Just looked at the tides and weather. High tide tomorrow is at 8:01am and 8:13pm, so ideally you'd need to be going downriver very early morning between 5-7am, or mid-late afternoon/early evening.

Once out on the ocean, the winds are forecast around 5 knots, light and variable, mostly from the north - slow going under sail, or plan on motoring. If the winds pick up from the north, don't go too far offshore or the waves in the Gulf Stream could get very lumpy.

Whatever you do, have fun and be safe :-)

Sorry for the delayed response DtM, but we ran into a few problems more and came to the conclusion she has to be shipped up and put on the hard for a while. We did our best to get her underway, but weather conditions and not having enough power yet changed the course. We had a lot of help out there from this site. And sooo appreciate all. 👍 . you guys are great! But we will have to get her shipped up from Cracker Boy Boat Yard this weekend to Green cove Springs. I have never demast a boat before but that's what we are doing tonight and tomorrow. Thank you all for the feedback. 😀
