Hi There

So..... Do you intend to use the Wind Turbine to charge a 24volt battery system and then use the charge controller to conect to the house bank ??

I dont believe its possible to use one of these controllers off the turbine directly into your battery bank as there is no over voltage dump load option ???

And the regulator possibly cant tell the turbine the batteries are full.......

The D400 has dump resistors.

Not quite as kludgey as looking to use diesel parts on a gas engine, but close.

Charge into a small 24V bank, might also be useful in future for winch / windlass / bowthruster / watermaker

Then use B2B DCDC charger to go from there into your main 12V bank.

Why not ask Eclectic Energy if it can be converted to 12 volt and what it would cost? Avoid a kluge system because it will never work as well as a product designed to do the job you want done.

No issue at all, treat the generator like a solar panel installation.

Re: Installing 24volt Wind Turbine ...into ..12volt system insatllation

Hi There

I have talked to Eclectic about changing the Stator from 24 to 12 Volts. And also i need a new charge controller.

It is possable , but it is rather expensive and after talking to a marine electricion about the job.... well I cant say its easy..... But a great way to possibly ruin a great piece of equipment........ I mean what could go wrong !!!

Re: Installing 24volt Wind Turbine ...into ..12volt system insatllation

Hi oleman

I have already installed solar.. 2 x 240 watts of 24 volt solar pannels. With two charge controlers ..... so I have a good understanding of the complexity.

The issue with wind is the fluctuation in output and how the controller handles the power surges. Then talks back to the wind turbine ...And to make matters worse.... I thougt that having had succes with the 24volt solar that the 24 volt wind turbine would also be easy......

So after spending alot ..alot ..alot of money on davit improvement its looking
impossable to install. The new frame to mount the turbine can even spin 180 degrees for easy access on the transome.....

PS I cant even tell my wife what Ive spent as she would shoot me !! ps and it dosent even go !!!!!!!!!!

First off, I have never done this type of installation for a wind turbine. However, I have used a step down converter to run 12 volt items from a 24 volt system on heavy equipment. You can check it our here. Please make sure you read all the directions/wiring diagrams.

Hi There

So Im thinking this DCDC24 to 12volt charger may just work ??

Victron Orion Voltage Converter (Non-Isolated / 24V - 12V DC / 70A)
Part No. VC-ORI241270020

Re: Installing 24volt Wind Turbine ...into ..12volt system insatllation

I think the options are, in order of desirability:
1. sell the D400 to someone who already has a 24 Volt setup, minimise your losses
2. change the D400 from 24 volt to 12 volt, and get a new controller, expensive option
3. follow the advice in post #5, as that is the only workable solution, as far as I can see, but such setup does certainly not follow the "keep it simple" principle

Along similar lines, there was a recent thread, of combining solar and wind into one controller: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ne-226751.html

BTW, I have x2 D400 units currently, and had several other wind generators in the past.

Yes, that's an example of a DCDC as in my post #5
