Catalina icebox problem

Hey i own a 1986 Catalina 27 standard rig with the traditional layout. right now my icebox drains right into the bilge, which is a big nono for me. I like my bilge when its not filled with food chunk's and orange juice. My sink drain sea cock is just inches away from the icebox drain, and i would be more comfortable having the water drain out through that instead of into my bilge. Now, i heard that if your heeled with a Catalina and the icebox is plumed directly to that through hull it fills the icebox with sea water, which is just a hazard. Should i put a check valve in, an anti siphon loop, or just leave it the way it is? It looks like a checkvalve would be the easiest option with the space available.

a check valve may work once.....but then you're going to have an icebox full of water again later.

an anti-siphon loop requires that you also have a pump to push the water over the top of the loop.

easiest solution is a pump with the discharge into the sink or cockpit, or some other above the heeled waterline discharge.

Re: Catalina icebox problem

How about closing off the sink thru hull when sailing?
Or plumb the ice box drain to the shower sump?

Close the thru hull while sailing. A check valve will not work for long.

Mine drains to the bilge too, but I have refrigeration so I get very little drainage.

Shower sump likely drains to the bilge also, but one of the attwood/jabsco sump drain box/pump things would also solve your problem.
