Last minute accommodations? - Abacos

Hi all, I'm looking for information about possibilities of finding lodging at short notice in the Abacos. I will be crossing some time in late March or early April 2017 from Florida to Grand Bahama and on to Green Turtle Cay (or at least that is the current plan). Is it at all realistic to think that I might find a hotel or BnB room with only a couple of days notice, i.e., making a reservation as soon as the weather window opens? I looked at availability at several places at Green Turtle Cay, and even this early, some are sold out for early April dates. The wife would appreciate a real bed and shower after the crossing, and I would really like to accommodate her since she has been quite supportive of my sailing boondoggles.

Not in GTC, but quite close - we were happy with the Lofty Fig in Marsh Harbour. Abaco Bahamas: Lofty Fig Villas. Hope to see you there - we'll be there at the same time!

Thanks Scatterling - I think I'm coming to the realization that we may be sleeping on the boat until we get to Marsh Harbor. Unless we just get lucky with a vacancy.

You shouldn't have any trouble at all finding lodging on GTC. Both the Bluff House and Green Turtle Yacht Club have docks and rooms. Also, there are plenty of houses available for vacation rental. Your wife would enjoy GTC exponentially more than she would Marsh Harbour. You could also check Guana Cay, or even better, Hopetown.

Thanks LowCountry. I'll check Hopetown - only issue might be my 5.5 foot draft.

My brother(Greg) has 2 houses on Great Guana Island. One has a dock with several slips. Both are available for rental(short term).

contact him at GBTurton@Bellsouth.net or 229-322-8770 Eastern Time (USA).

We anchored just outside hope town and did great. Looking at the chart for hope town, looks like there is plenty of draft room for you. I remember the channel is pretty well marked. See attached.. lots of really great places for rent there.

Re: Last minute accommodations? - Abacos

Thanks MapDad for the info on Hopetown. For some reason, I thought I had looked at the Explorer chart and found it too shallow - I appreciate you straightening me out. DeepCut, I appreciate the information on your brother's houses on Guana, but I still have the issue of not know my exact arrival date because of waiting for the weather window. But I'll talk to him via email and see what he thinks.

Thanks everybody for your help!

Look into Ocean Reef near Lucaya Grand Bahamas. Really a resort but has plenty of dock space used mostly by Canadians during the winter months. They should be leaving about the time you would be arriving.

Thanks DoubleWide, but I'm not planning to be on the south side of Grand Bahama. Looks like there are options in the Abacos, anyway.

Re: Last minute accommodations? - Abacos

five and a half feet is not a problem in hopetown. Just wait for high tide. My boat draws that and we were in and out of there various times last winter. GTC is a great stop west of whale cay. Spanish cay is another possibility. Customs is there and on GTC also. Marsh Harbour is good to provision, repair and fly in and out of. Not really a garden spot.

Grabbers on Guana also has rooms. You could anchor and dingy in or get a slip at Orchid Bay Marina.
