Argentina Currency Control

Hi,

We will be arriving in Argentina soon by sailboat, traveling the Parana and Paraguay rivers and ending up in Buenos Aires. We are looking for information on how cruisers are dealing with the money situation and black market for dollars in Argentina. Is it easy to buy dollars in Uruguay to trade in Argentina? Are people trading Brazilian Reis in Buenos Aires at all? Is it easy to find people with american bank accounts (i.e. business owners, dentists, etc) who will give a fair rate for wired money?

Thanks

Argentinians have restrictions to buy US$, the black market rate is twice the official one (pesos are worth half in the black market). Buy if you have dollars, there are no restrictions to spend them.

Very easy, yet be careful of customs in Argentina: as in many countries, there is a limit on the cash you can carry across borders.

Yes, but I don't know if the rate is good. Check the Argentinian papers.

I doubt that anyone will be willing to get in trouble, risk taxes, etc., to make you a favor.

If you have a credit card, you'll be able to spend all the money you want without doing any tricks.

Looks like a nice trip, post your adventures. I'm in Montevideo, if you stop by send me a msg.

Re: Argentina Currency Control

Great, thanks!
This is good information. We are in Concepcion Paraguay now and finding it easy to buy dollars already, so hopefully we can come in with enough for awhile then pop over to Uruguay. We have six months to kill before we can go back to Brasil, so we intend to explore a lot of Argentina and Uruguay both.

How is the frontera dealt with around Buenos Aires/Montevideo? Can you go back and forth freely in the daytime, or do you have to check in and out of each country with every visit?

Also are there a lot of boats which anchor out or is it more typical to be in a marina?

It's a regular border cross. You have to have a passport (visa depending on country of origin) and go thru customs. In Argentina they use cash-sniffing dogs in border points, but I doubt they'll inspect your boat unless you behave suspiciously.

There are places where you can anchor, but most harbors have either moorings or marinas. The cheapest are Puerto Sauce (Juan Lacaze) (paper mill smell), Carmelo, La Paloma. In Montevideo you have Puerto del Buceo with full services, but draft is a challenge there. See Puertos Deportivos del Uruguay

Re: Argentina Currency Control

Hi, marshappynation
You as a foreigner can not buy dollars here.
If you sell the dollars in the official market will pay him $ 4.50, and a black market $ 6.20.
You can buy with your debit or credit card, here you will be asked your passport on every purchase.
If you take money from the ATM you are going to convert their dollars to $ 4.50
In the northern area of Buenos Aires some clubs get a free week to visitors, as the Barlovento Club and the Yacht Club Argentino.
Uruguay is in front but it's another country, so whenever you go from here to complete the forms of migration, customs and coastguard.
