Hi! I've been lurking here a while asking questions and gaining knowledge from the helpful people in these forums, and wanted to post that myself and my fiancee started a blog recently.

I wanted to start the blog before buying a boat because a lot of other blogs I've read are missing the details of how they found and selected their boat, since they started the blog later on.


Happy to hear any suggestions you have. But please keep in mind it's still a work in progress - the URL is temporary since we haven't named our boat yet, and I want to move it to a paid wordpress.org domain eventually.

Make sure to detail the import process if you can. Canadian boats are starting to look attractive with the dollar difference.

Prices on boats in Canada, from ON, all the way out to the Maritimes, are low, & seem to keep dropping. A lot more than in BC, perhaps even enough to warrant buying something back E. & having it trucked out W.
If, that is, you've got the time to shop in such a manner. Especially as diesel is relatively cheap, re. the trucking option right now.
Though if you have the time to shop thusly, then perhaps you could take your time sailing her back & enjoy the Caribbean & lots of other places along the way.

And THANKS for starting this blog. There's lots of info out there on boat buying as compared to 20 (or 40) years ago. But for newbies the learning curve can still be Real steep.

For example, I re-financed a boat about a dozen years ago, & the guy @ the bank told me that we'd just done about 2x as many documents as go with buying a house.

To followup, I did end up writing this post, and yesterday wrote another on how the import process actually went - in short, it went horribly!

It turned out multiple people had misled me with wrong or incomplete information (the broker, the documentation company, and Customs themselves) and US Customs decided to detain us (indefinitely until we could find a customs broker willing to do a trivial yacht job on a weekend - trivial compared to their normal line of work, which is importing billionaire dollar container ships and such).

You can find that post under "Stuck in Customs" on the blog in my sig if you're interested. If you're thinking about buying a boat in Canada and taking it to the US, plan on some extra expense and don't trust what anyone tells you, even the people who work in Customs (and be sure to get the names of whoever you talk to).
