Do you need a captain's licence for pleasure boating to central america

we going to be traveling in Central America & south america and we are not sure if we need to have a captain's licence. Im Australian and in Australia we do not need to have a captains licence for pleasure boats.

I read that Mexican immigration requires captains licence, do you know if this information is accurate? Do you have any information regarding this subject for other countries of central and southern america?

Thank you

You do not need to have a captains license for pleasure boats in any of these countries.

Noonsite.com is best place to check clearance details.
We have cleared in Mexico, El Salvador , Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia. There was no request for any licenses

No! In 30 years sailing in North America, followed by 23 more around the world on GAIA, including two visits to South America, albeit only Brazil, the three Guyanas, Central America incl Mexico, we have never been asked to prove that we knew what we were doing 😊

Most places probably assume that if you made it there from across the ocean, you already know what you're doing. :-)

Actually, the Mexican goes to great lengths to aid hapless sailors, and the Mexican Red Cross is also able to order them into action.

They do. A sailboat went onto the reef at Bahia de Ascension a month ago and the Navy came from somewhere and pulled them off. Then the same boat caught on fire and the navy helped them again.
