A half performance cat should ( apparently) JUST survive a 20 knot breeze, and maybe manage around 4 knots... based on evidence of course.

You'll be fine, just add some ballast.

Yeah, backyard boat. Forgot the ballast apparently. Lucky we never get more than 9 knots wind here, sails cost too much.

If you're interested, some pics of the building process here:

Re: Dufour catamaran

If ypou missed this link, there is a bit of more info here:

https://www.w-yacht.no/wp-content/up...an-48-Info.pdf

If we compare the factory supplied data (careful, I am saying "factory supplied" , not necessarily the truth ) vs. FP 47 and Bavaria Nauthitech 46, which are preassumebly in the same league;

Dufour 48:

displacement: 14.995 kg
mainsail: 76 sqm, genoa: 48 sqm. total upwind: 124 sqm

FP Saona 47:

displacement: 13.800 kg
mainsail:75 sqm genoa: 52 sqm total upwind: 127 sqm

Bavaria 46:

displacement: 10.600 kg
mainsail: 69 sqm for flybridge version, 74 sqm for open version, genoa :38 sqm total: 107-112 sqm.

Another important factor is the hull width to hull length ratio (how sleek are the hulls) that the manufacturers never give..

Overall, it seems that Dufour could be a bit slower than her direct competition. But who cares ?

Pricewise, they are pretty close to each other..

Cheers

For a bit more detail (just being pedantic) for comparative purposes:

From the factory spec sheet supplied with this boat:
Lagoon 450 2011

Light Displacement CE 15,500 Kg
Full Displacement 21,500 Kg
Standard Mainsail 82.5 sq m
Square Top Mainsail 85sq m
Genoa 51.8m

Upwind sail = 134.3 - 136.8 sq m

Gennaker 105 sq M

Spinnaker 190 sq m

LWL 13.38m
LOA standard 13.96 m
LOA with optional equipment 14.45m
Beam 7.84m

Other differences to compare
Fuel Capacity 1000 liters
Water Capacity 460 Litres

Re: Dufour catamaran

@Bean Counter: those are interesting numbers to compare indeed. It seems the latest cats have much more fuel capacity but way less water ...

Fuel: L450 has 1040l where L440 has 650l
Water: L450 has 350l (with option for 700l total) where L440 has 900l standard.

I suspect there are not many 450 out there w/o a watermaker !

Some manufacturers still offer as an option additional water tank, but I believe WM's are pretty much standard option to consider. The boats now have much more energy available on board and the price of WM's are going down, generally speaking. I also see that water availability in most places becomes increasingly problematic.
On top, carrying 400-500 liters of less water is the biggest advantage for cats.

Cheers
