Conventional wisdom says:

Hurricane season is risky from August to November in the Caribbean and Atlantic, but hurricanes can occur before and after that peak season.

Many boats wait until the trade winds get going and depart the Canaries in January.

Note: this is a voyage I have not done yet, but hope to do in the future.

After November sail south to the Cape Verdes, make a right turn, make the crossing, drop the anchor, hit the pub.

the timeframe Don refers to is for the crossing, not the hurricanes.
