AntiFouling - how long before going into water

My yacht is on the hard undergoing minor work - including new ablative anti fouling. Will it be OK if the anti fouling is applied now and the yacht goes into the water in one month after that?

Depends on the paint type. Look on the tin... all the paints that I have ever used give a minimum and maximum time before launch.

For Micron CSC Ablative, you have about 60 days to get it back into the water after painting.

If longer, I believe they recommend scrubbing the bottom paint with a coarse brush before you launch

The answer to your question is on the paint can. if you've thrown the can away of covered the label with pain, the answer will be on the manufacturer's website.

Sounds like he's having the work done by a boatyard so maybe no access to "the can."

Maybe he requested a certain paint though and can check the web, but around here most yards usually have a favorite they normally just use

Trinidad is the choice here at a few yards, and it's 60 days with that brand as well

We are using Sigma Ecofleet 530 - but no information found on tin or website.

No max refloating time. Minimum 8 hours.

If in doubt, email Sigma.

Cheers,

The favorite is probably the one they can mark up the most. I had a yard tell me the profit was mark up not in the labor.

Re: AntiFouling - how long before going into water

When to go in varies so much on the paint. For us, we can get 4-5 years out of Trinidad SR even though we average 7 months on the hard. The lift operator suggested not sanding before re-launch. (It was pressure wash cleaned on haul-out.) We tried it...no change in performance. The oxidized/sun exposed outer coating ablates leaving the copper loaded antifoulant hard coat to do its work

But for our PropPurr™ prop coating, the manufacturer recommends that the boat be launched within 1 hour to 2 days. In the water, there is less oxygen and the water is surface tension "repelled" by the silicone coating. In the air, the oxygen can penetrate the coating (like moisture vs. water in the Gore-tex rainwear), eventually leading to corrosion below that compromises the silicone coating.
