Halberg-Rassy Carpets?

Can someone explain why all Halberg-Rassys on YachtWorld have carpets?

It is the only brand I have ever seen with wall-to-wall carpeting.

Re: Halberg-Rassy Carpets?

People like to have carpets because they're warmer on your feet, lend a homey appearance; and they trap the sand that comes in on your feet. Carpet can hide water damage to the cabin sole. Some people install them for those reasons.

However, the carpets trap dirt and moisture, which is held against the cabin sole. In cases where they are not glued down or otherwise affixed, people hose them off from time to time. Saw one go off a motor yacht and into the sea that way, once.

Its a well known fact that Halberg Rassy use inferior wood on their boats causing multiple sinkings. So they put carpet over it.

I was working for a shop that commisioned alot of them on the west coast in the late 90's. The carpet panels were pretty much standard, all teak and holly under. Seemed like pretty industrialish can't remember if it was common sense hold down or snaps.

I would be more worried about the smurf blue pleather upholstery, that seemed to be a hot item????

But I'm curious as to the "why". No other manufacturer that I am aware of sells boats with carpeting.

That unique quality might be it. "The only one" stands out in memory. I suggest the carpet is marketing, not because people want carpet, but because they will remember the boat with the carpet.

Re: Halberg-Rassy Carpets?

Scandinavia is cold, so it is warm to your feet with a carpet. You can unclip them if you do not like them, or remove them in the tropics.

Another point is they are a bit pedantic out there and take plenty of care in their boats. It is easy to replace carpets but very expensive and messy to redo the soles.

Cheers,
b.

We took our carpets up in our Hallberg Rassy salon and replaced it with a Turkish carpet- including the snaps. Looks and works great. We are also able to see more of the beautiful holly and teak floors that were hidden by the wall to wall carpet.

  1. Warm in the winter.
  2. Better traction with bare feet.
  3. Easier on the feet.
  4. Better traction with wet feet (or sweaty).
  5. Catches the sand so that it doesn't grind the varnish (takes only minutes to take it out and shake). After 20 years my sole is still perfect.
  6. Things don't break when dropped. Or leave a dent. Not everything is plastic.
Holding water isn't an issue because I have a hard top (rain doesn't blow in and wet gear can be left outside). Replacement is easy, since I use rubber-backed runners; just trim to shape. Sliding is a non-issue because it is a catamaran--but that would be easily solved with simple fasteners.

For me #1 seals it. Does your house have carpet? Does your car? To me, it would feel sterile without it.

Must be easily removable for cleaning or drying, of course.

Re: Halberg-Rassy Carpets?

When we first started boat shopping, I thought "Why on earth would someone put carpet in a boat?!" Well, after living onboard in the Pacific Northwest for two years, and in the Sea of Cortez for one year, I now know why.

Carpet is actually more comfortable on the feet - it feels much warmer in colder climates. And is no problem in hot climates.

Rugs/carpet provides a non-slip surface for wet feet, from the shower or swimming.

The rugs catch a surprising amount of living debris. They are easy to roll up, shake out overboard, and relatively cheap to replace.

I crewed on an HR that had wall-to-wall carpet. The boat was only a few years old, but already the snaps that were holding the carpet down were broken or tearing through the carpet, which created several prime trip hazards. There was even "wall-to-wall" carpeting on the galley floor. It appeared like it was a chore to keep clean, as it wasn't.

We opted for rubber-backed throw rugs so we an easily access all the compartments in the bilge and shake them out regularly.

Re: Halberg-Rassy Carpets?

Our boat has teak flooring in the galley and the salon... carpets everywhere else.

Reduces noise level and adds comfort.
