Marina outlaws rowing of dinghy's...

Morning everyone,

So I was reading through a blog (Far Reach Voyages) and it mentioned that there was a marina that forbid him to row his dinghy into the marina for water. So I reached out and asked the marina to clarify their position. I got a piddly little 2 line response.

Yes, that is correct. Crown Bay Marina requires that all vessels entering into the Crown Bay Marina basin be under full power.

We thank you very much for taking the time to verify.

Kind regards,

Christine Starshak

Now while I personally think this seems like a very silly rule, they can make any rules they like inside their own marina. But I would like to understand better where they are coming from on this.

What I am wondering is, why do you think they would make such a rule??

-Because people who still row their dinghy are perhaps looked upon as an undesirable crowd for the marina? Perhaps they only want big powerful RIB's because they know the people have money to spend?

In the blog post it is mentioned that they say a dinghy under oars might not be able to get out of the way fast enough...
-I thought rules of the road would put the dinghy under oar in right of way (first off), as well as the fact that my Fatty Knees would not respond any faster under engine than her oars. She is also MUCH more maneuverable under oars. Although I bet that would be true with an inflatable under oar.

Chime in and let me know what you think.

If you disagree with the marina rule, the power is always in our hands- dont support their business until they change the rule.

If you do support this rule, please explain your position for it.

Thank you everyone!

I think they wrote the rule to keep people from trying to sail into the Marina, which can be difficult at best and cause damage to other vessels.
I’d suspect they are using that rule to keep him out for whatever reason they chose to.

It seems like a nice dinghy and a well kept yacht.

I wonder if the concern is that oars stick out and could strike a boat.

I've experienced a number of marinas that didn't have a dinghy dock at all, which made visiting friends annoying. Often these were power boat marinas and their clients did not have dinghies.

At least in the US, right up until you touch the dock you are not actually on their property. That doesn't stop many from having rules banning sailing into your slip. I've done that a few times, but generally because of engine trouble.

Who knows.

In the blog post, he borrowed/repaired a small motor and used it without further trouble. So their goal does not seem to be to block him.

I think your spot on ThinWater. Its a powerboat mega-yacht style marina and they dont want some little "dinghy" rowing in. It has a pet-boutique and salon. So I imagine its a class thing. They look down on a man who rows. haha

Or just making a blanket rule (to keep sailboats from sailing in and damaging a high end marina/client boats) and employees lacking the power or ability to apply common sense.

Re: Marina outlaws rowing of dinghy's...

I have been to Crown Bay Marina several times and, while I am loathe to defend them for various reasons, they do have a point. Crown bay can be very busy with a narrow entrance and a wicked cross wind if the trades are up. In fact before entering in anything larger than a dinghy you need to get clearance from the dockmaster.
A dinghy should have the ability to quickly get out of the way, something a rowed fully loaded inflatable may not be able to do. Crown Bay does maintain a good size dinghy dock which is usually packed with dinghys that are hardly from a mega yacht. If that were to go away it would be a great loss to the cruising community.

Crown Bay Marina in St.Thomas VI with this is becoming very UNPOPULAR. You bet, I'm not gone touch it at all, even with a 4 ft. stick, I feel they stink.
So sorry about them.

I completely agree about the loaded inflatable being a dead duck without an engine. In my opinion those boats are completely disabled without a proper engine.

Perhaps the employee comment is spot on. Although we all know how un-common sense is, which is why so many employees are given short leashes.

But how would you tell inflatable guy "you cant do that" but let the proper rowing hard dink do it..

In my book a dinghy ,with no outboard hanging on the stern, is "under full power" when rowed or skulled.

I wonder if the concern is that oars stick out and could strike a boat.

It’s possible that it has three things against it, it’s small, probably older, and it’s a sailboat.
Of course that is just speculation.
For those that turn their noses up at such things, rowing dinghies fit right in.

Of course it’s just speculation, but unless your spending significant money in a Marina, most don’t seem to want you there.
I’ve often been met with disdain fueling up in South Fl, cause I’m sure I’m not taking 1000 gls of fuel like they expect, my 50 gl isn’t worth bothering with

Re: Marina outlaws rowing of dinghy's...

I’ve seen marinas with no-sail rules, but no rowing seems ridiculous. It’s hard for me to conjure a scenario where not being able to row fast enough would be a safety factor for marinas. All marinas I’ve ever been in severely restrict speed and wake. Not so here?

I suspect it has more to do with keeping the riffraff out — people like me (not that I’ve ever been down there).

I guess, it is a necessity, small entrance, currents, wind and swell that can make entering, leaving, or avoiding collisions when rowing a challenge, or may flip a dinghi.

+1 on that.

Unfortunately, "common sense" has become an oxymoron.
