Jeanneau 389 v. Dufour 382

Anyone else looked at them and done a comparison. would be interesting to hear some other peoples thoughts.

Le Jeanneau 389 is the 379 with minimal differences. It is a narrower boat with a bigger B/D ratio. The Dufour is a beamier boat with more hull form stability. The Dufour will sail with less heel, will go a little better downwind and the Jeanneau better upwind.

If you want something really different have a Salona 38 or a Dehler 38.

After many months of hesitation (Bavaria 37 vs Jeanneau 389 vs Dufour 382 vs many different second-hand boats) I picked the 382 for more spacious and much better looking interior and some oher nice thingies - retractable bow thruster, furling code zero, and a hefty price reduction by the dealer

Just curious - did you look at Beneteau? To the eye they look the very similar.

Beneteau has no traditional (U-shaped) galley configuration with their 38 cruiser (if I recall correctly). Also, Beneteau's was the only local dealer who completely ignored my inquiries - I guess they did not really want my business...

We looked at the Beneteau 38 as well, but as mentioned... no U shaped galley was the killer on that one. Thus we are down to the 389 and the 382. We are having the same dealer issues regarding our Dufour as you did Csory with the Beneteau, which is one of my major concerns... I want to ensure I dont have massive headaches when warranty issues pop up or I want yard modifications done (I realize i can go to another yard).

Csory, what are you using the boat for? Other than the price reduction and the cabin feel was there anything else you noticed? What overall were your feelings on the 389?

Our Jeanneau dealer is awesome and is one of the big reasons i'm leaning that way... I also feel the cockpit storage is much more useful and thought out however I do agree with your views on the cabin layouts.

Can't judge your "would-be experience" with that given dealer but I would definitely not want to buy a new boat from a dealer that I'm not totally confident with. Here both the Jeanneau and Dufour dealers are awesome (and Bavaria's too just for justice's sake...)

A few years of inland cruising (lake Balaton, beautiful place to sail, with serious storms from nothing within 2 minutes...) then the Med , and maybe a transat when moving back to my beloved VA.

The cockpit storage on the 382 seems more than adequate for me - don't forget the two large wet lockers underneath the rear cockpit floor, one for dinghy and another one for the standard life raft box.

I didn't really like the only interior color available on the Jeanneau, also the woodwork is noticeably nicer on the Dufour. Really disliked the J's stovetop - one can't just cover it and regain the surface since on the Jeanneau it is about an inch above the other parts of the countertop.

As for negatives with the 382 - I will have to add rub rails later (they are not part of the design) and found tank/battery monitoring system ancient and inadequate. Will modify that with a DIY add-on (see my separate thread about that...) Holding tank capacity is only 12 gallons on the 382 - might not be an issue for you. To sum it up, I picked the boat I felt "nicer", still at a bit higher price than any of the competitors.

The best advice I ever found was "buy the boat that makes your heart sing."

Congratulations. The 379 is a fine sailboat and the 389 will be no different, since it is practically the same boat.
The Bavaria 37 has a nice spacious interior but in what regards sailing is not a match for the 389.

Thanks - but I went with the Dufour instead The 382 I tested was the "Performance" version with a 0.5m taller mast, and was about a knot faster than the standard-issue competitors (both J and B) both up- and downwind.
