Hello from Long Island New York

Hi everyone i have been browsing this form for a few weeks decided to join in. My evolution of boating started with small dinghies and wood boats destined for a landfill that I fixed up and used as a kid. Then on to several different types of powerboats and cabin cruises I had for many years to follow. About 15 years ago I started sailing my only regret with sailing is that I didn't start sailing in my childhood. I start with a Hobie 14 then move to oday mariner 19 (loved that boat) to Catalina 25 standard rig swing keel which I still sail today with retirement from work in the not-so-distant future I've been looking to move up to the 36 to 45 foot range mono monohull for Coastal and Caribbean sailing I'm hoping to find some links and information through these forums and learn from other people's experiences
Who knows maybe someday I'll be a shellback

Re: Hello from Long Island New York

Welcome aboard, fellow Long Islander here, (western sound).
Did not sail as a child either thought was only for the wealthy, better late than never!
First sailed on the Mariner's brother a Rhodes 19, agree great boats.
Much good info on forum, many old threads well worthwhile seeking out.
I often times do a google search of subject and then just tag on cruisersforum at end,
works well for me.

Welcome aboard. The more the merrier!

I wonder if you are on any of the 350 acres that my greatest grandfather owned back in 1625? The Van Cleeve's. Wish I still had it now. Corn didn't grow well in the LI soil.

Potato farming flourished from what I recall. The "potato bug" kinda put the kabosh to that.

Re: Hello from Long Island New York

Until very recently Long Island's Suffolk county was New york state's highest producing agricultural county.
Was not always the case as early Long Islander farmers found the soil so poor that they
formed co-op's to fish the abundant mahaden (bunker) from the surrounding waters
to plow under for fertilizer.
Now many of the fields/farms have given way to development.
