Why Mono Sailors Hate Cats: The Bare Truth is Shocking!

Pictures Tell a Story: Why Mono Sailors Hate Cats

I like Sailboats. (Period, Full Stop)
______________

Good Humor and Good Will Mends Rifts

This photo I am starting this thread with is posted to add a little levity to the collegial atmosphere that can get heated when Mono vs. Multi is discussed. I am not starting this thread to raise hackles or cause disharmony. I am not a Troll. Instead, I think good humor can bring us to realize things that are difficult to express and good images or photos can illustrate that without any words at all.

So, I suggest we start a visual dialog. One where pictures tell the story.

My Suggestion:
To this thread I suggest adding more photos of what Multihull sailors know makes Catamarans (or any multi) so vexing and enviable for Mono sailors. They could be photos of speed, of comfort, of spacious interiors, of cockpit parties, etc.

But, I also suggest we keep this thread one full of POSITIVE aspects of multi hull boats and not get into heated arguments about things. Simply post a photo to illustrate what you see as a positive aspect. It could be your own boat, or another.

I will start with a simple photo, but I hope you will join in, and please stay in a spirit of humor and good will, with some more photos that show CF Members what causes this divide.

My POV? My Goal?
I would love to own a Multihull, or a Monohull and will make myself happily available to sail on either as crew whenever asked (seriously). In fact, one of my goals for 2017 is to get as much time on cats as possible while sailing anywhere in the world. In fact, I am devoting a full year (2017) or more to sailing (full time) on OPB and am available on short notice to assist owners. I hope to do so in the Caribbean, Pacific, Atlantic and on a wide variety of boats. It is my goal to learn firsthand from CF Members, both mono and multi owners, what you love about your boats and what makes them special to you. I plan to make it a Win+Win for all I meet.

My Experience with Multis?
While most of my sailing over 40 years has been done on Monohulls, some of my most fun memories were while sailing on catamarans. And one of the most impressive things I saw was when a Trimaran blasted past me going twice as fast as my fast monohull. Multis have always held a special interest for me, as I suspect they may for many Mono sailors.

Hahaha

I think the drivel only exists online. I've never met anyone who refused to board either when invited over for dinner and drinks at an anchorage.

Good Point!

That is what I imagine to be the case worldwide.

As I see it, we have more important things in common (our love of sailing, adventure, etc.) than we have separating us as sailors.

Steady, I have enjoyed your recent threads. However, this one is a dud.

The premise is not a reality on the water, in my opinion.

Some will be doubtful, but the vast majority of mono sailors are neither vexed, aggravated or envious of cat owners or their boats.

That picture just proves that cost of owning a multi is much higher than a mono...

Thanks for your comment.

I know that it may not win everyone over, but I do think it could prove to be an interesting and helpful thread if it remains in a positive tone.

And, as far as "hate" I agree. I chose that title because I think it will resonate with many sailors and arouse their curiosity.

I think most sailors would enjoy a sail on any boat, and that a smaller number will express loudly their dislike of anything. That is human nature and groups.

I hope that this thread would simply serve as a fun (or funny) way to show some of the appeal cats have and do so in a way that does add to some good will.

Anyway, dud or not, I do look forward to possibly meeting you (or any cat or mono) owners as I travel and sail more this year.

Good one!

That's the spirit of humor I was hoping to stimulate.

Yeah, I couldn't afford 1/14th of that boat (I think 14 is the right number; I kept losing count.)

I am 76 years old and own a catamaran. The way I see it, it could be fatal (if they die, they die).

We sailed with an old Maine coon cat for 10 years. Great sailor. Kept the rodents under control. Even swam when in ports.

I'm only vexed, aggrivated and envious that I no longer have a 20 year old body!
But no worries, I make up for it with my smoking hot mind!

Re: Why Mono Sailors Hate Cats: The Bare Truth is Shocking!

The wife and I were fairly new to sailing (about 5 years) when I retired. All our training and experience had been on monohulls and so that is what we went with when we bought our first boat and same with our new one to live aboard. Since we are on a fixed income and are currently staying in a marina until spring, the monohull makes even more sense due to slip rates. The first image shows us in a slip where someone else in a monohull boat would occupy the adjacent finger pier. A catamaran would occupy both spots and subsequently double the cost of the moorage.

There are many nice cats I have seen in the marina, and I would love to sail on one sometime, but the learning curve now would not allow us to go out cruising as soon as we would like. And that is our goal. I will add that one of the other benefits of owning a mono with a deeper bilge is shown below on the right:
