Anybody seen this hull cleaning drone?

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...are-of-your-hu

Not affiliated, and leary of vaporware products that kickstarter/etc put out. Somebody posted about this on my facebook page and thought I'd share it here to see what people think.

Re: Anybody seen this hull cleaning drone?

nope...still using a mexican with a scraper and good lungs....oh yeah--here they have hookah rigs, unlike most in barra....

looks interesting, tho--but for the price--one would need to form a consortium and share a lot for it to rapidly earn its keep, and it best be damned good for the money.
good luck-- if you get one, lemme know how it does--mebbe test it on bad paint ha h aha ha ha
you kids coming to mazatlan this year?

Well, right off the bat, the "Keelcrab" is not the "first underwater drone" designed for hull cleaning. I know of at least one other similar device that has had a years-long head start. But that one didn't catch on for the very same reasons this one won't.

Hi. I tried it in Italy some months ago. It worked well, but the hull wasn't so dirty!

$2500 for the drone. Stick with a diver or buy some scuba gear and do it yourself. I'm always surprised at how many cruisers/boat owners are unable to go under their own boat to have a look and fix things.

They need to make one that converts algae to energy to run on, and the waste is zinc.

The path following and consistently cleaning is the difficult bit. Be wary of kick starters that may be using mocked up vids.

As many kickstarters are realizing building hardware is far more challenging than building an app.

While many will accept apps full of bugs that is rarely the case with hardware.

I like the concept but struggle to see how you can solve the path following and robustness at an affordable price.

There appears to be a lens at the front I wonder if this is a camera for the operator.

Is the path following really that hard? You're probably right..

But maybe you could start at the waterline, where very basic machine vision could see the start of the bottom paint... Then the next pass, register off of the line between clean / not clean..

Yes Geordi, just like peeling an orange!
