Sailing from St. Martin to St. Croix

Hello all!

Planning a sail for May and was wondering if anyone has any experience sailing from St. Martin to St. Croix. Looks like pretty much a down wind run but would love to hear any insight.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, you're in the trade winds belt. In May you will have 94.378% odds of a downwind run to St Croix. Biggest variable will be wind strength.

I was there once in May when it was only 15.5 knots.

Thanks! I've been sailing in the BVI for a few years and realize going the other way can be adventurous but hadn't hear of anyone sailing this particular passage.
Looking forward to it!

Made that trip, Feb. 2012. Overnighter, 4:30 PM to 9:00 AM. 18-22 kts (true) following wind with lumpy 6 ft following seas. Autopilot held. Squalls on radar passed us by, but missed us.

Here's a great resource that may assist you. We're heading out of Marsh Harbour this week and going your way.

94.378% (!?)

Did you know that 75.283% of all statistics are made up on the spot?

Maybe I forgot to add a compensating factor for the El Nino. I'll rerun the numbers and get back to you.

I'm 99 and 44/100% certain that this is so.

Re: Sailing from St. Martin to St. Croix

I've done it both ways.....
It's more advantageous in my opinion to sail to St.Croix for a few days and then the shorter trip to St. Martin into the wind but from a better direction.
Coming home is usually a sleigh ride up.
Have fun!

Re: Sailing from St. Martin to St. Croix

Easy peasy downwind run. Back in 2012, Christiansted harbour busy, and tricky to find an anchorage that wasn't in the way of the seaplanes or directly over a wreck!
