North Carolina liveaboard Marinas

Hey everyone, I’ve been on the forum for a little bit of time and love seeing everybodys input on different things. I wanted to ask if anybody knew of decent liveaboard marinas in NC. I plan on moving aboard next summer on my 29 foot Ericson,Thanks for the info!

Lots of population centers (or not) in NC... Wilmington, Beaufort, New Bern, Southport, etc etc etc

Any idea what other features you're looking for?

Just the basics. Wifi, bathrooms/showers. It would also be nice to have things nearby. (Walking/Biking) I’ve looked online but it is hard to find any info about any marinas that allow liveaboards. Thanks for the help!

Most marinas in Oriental allow live aboards.

'a little more info would help pin down a better response.
- Do you wan't access to quick afternoon sailing; far from from open water, but great hurricane protection; or just access to an ocean inlet?
- Would you accept a marina that is miles from a town or is a minimum of a small town required.
- Is inexpensive and "trailer-park/fish camp" acceptable or do you want something a little classier?

North Carolina liveaboard marinas are varied.

Acces to good afternoon sailing would be great, Hurricane protection isnt a huge thing because I haul my boat out during that season, marinas in NC do not allow boats to stay during hurricanes unless they own the slip.

I would like to be as close to a town as possible.. I do not mind the “Trailer-park/fish camp” but also wouldnt mind being in something a little more classy. Im not a very picky person.

I sorta meant area stuff. Big city? Small town? Employment issues? Health care issues? If stuff like that matters, there's likely a big difference between Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach and Swansboro or Oriental and so forth.

This website left out Northwest Creek Marina in New Bern, which has many live aboards. It has WiFi, showers, diesel and gasoline. Nearest grocery store is about 7 miles away. I do not know cost for live aboards.

Either big or small is good. I would like to be within 20 minutes of a beach but its not a huge deal if not. I have no health issues, im only 21 years old so I can make things work. Opportunities for work nearby would also be great. I have a solid 4 years in construction but I dont have to have a job in that field.

Not true everywhere. I believe all the marinas in the New Bern area allow you to stay. I know for a fact the two in downtown had plenty of boats for the last hurricane, Bridge Point took a real beating and now closed.


+1 for Northwest Creek - the staff has a well deserved reputation for taking very good care of boats during hurricanes, is liveaboard friendly and I think has the amenities you asked for. We had very little damage during last year's storms and nothing for the last hurricane.


New Bern is a long trip to open ocean but has some great sailing in the Neuse River, Pamlico Sound out to Oracoke Island. And Cape Lookout is truly a gem.

Give Oriental a good look. A quaint little sailing town with a good vibe and enough happening to keep things interesting. Good sailing right outside the harbor on the Neuse.

You could probably find some work at one of the boatyards or at one of the shops in town.

1. Are you a live aboard full time on a boat that does not move?

OR

2. Are you crewing a boat and staying aboard in a marina to manage and maintain the boat between passages?

Never had a "liveaboard" problem in any marina under 2. Have stayed in "no live aboard" Marina's up to 6 months at a time without problem or complaint.

My experience is the "no live aboard" is meant to keep poorly maintained vessel that do not move and may not run out of Marina's. I am sure you have seen many vessels converted to houseboats through neglect. What Marina would want this?
