Our Paint Exploded! - Redo of a 2008 Searunner Look-a-Like

We purchased our 40ft Searunner look-a-like in 2012. It was built by Iriwn Krebs, of Perry Florida and was the last boat of eight that he built. We were advised by John Marples that Krebs was a renegade and never paid for the plans on any of his boats and therefore they are not "certified" Searunners.

Originally the boat was named "Comocean", When the boat was almost completed, Kreb's was diagnosed with cancer and was not expected to live very long. They took it on an eight month cruise and then put it on blocks for two years. Following his death, "Comocean" was put on the market, we had it surveyed and purchased her.

We named her "Wingin' it" and the love affair began. Initially we spent 35,000 to upgrade electronics, infrastructure and re-stepping the mast and rigging. After 40 years of sailing mono-hulls Wingin'it was a pleasure to sail with friends and family, then the cracks appeared.

It seems that Kreb in his rush to prepare the boat for his final cruise, did not prep the glass on the three hulls for the first coat of primer. We found that this type of builders negligence is not covered by insurance.

First it was a crack, here and there. We patched them but more cracks continued to appear on the amas and main hull. All it took was for one freeze to come through Carrabelle Florida one evening and the condensation between the glass and primer expanded and literally blew large sections of paint off the sides of the boat, overnight.

We had the boat inspected by Boat US, our carrier and were informed we were on our own, they would not offer one dime...oh well, go figure.

We pulled the boat and put her in a yard to assess the work that needed to be done. It was obvious that this was going to continue being a problem and that all the paint need to be grinded off the boat and the boat needed to be completely repainted.

Well, it has been three months and Wingin'it it is taking her new shape and facelift very well. I'll share the before and after photos and will continue with this forum segment, all the way through the splash.

I think you will be impressed with the re-birthing of our Searunner look-a-like.

having just ground off many years of hard bottom paint on a 37 foot mono, i can almost feel your pain. but the good news is it's probably just the paint, and therefore not structural. could have been the glass itself, and that would have been a bummer.

Thanks. Yes it is only the paint, the first step was grinding with a ZEC grinding head, made in Italy. I used a 16 grit and was able to grind 220 feet of hull. It took me three months.

We decided to fill in all the 90 degree angles below the wings and give her a more streamlined look.

Looks good, where in Carrabelle are you?
We used to keep a boat in the moorings, is the Police Dept still just a phone booth?

Short video of underwings, following installation of right angles on stringers and filling of wing joints, and just prior to final sanding of underwings.

Looks like a lot of work. I just did a topsides and deck paint job 2 years ago. What paint are you going to use? We used Interlux Perfect 2 part and I wont every paint with any single part paint again. I hear Awlgrip is great too but we were roll and tipping which turned in to roll and rolling and the Interlux had better directions. Good luck looks like a fine boat!

Thanks. We will finish her off with a 6oz finishing cloth and then will spray primer, followed by a Blue Glow white, also sprayed.

Re: Our Paint Exploded! - Redo of a 2008 Searunner Look-a-Like

We've finished the glassing of the four underwing streamers. The originally the stringers were 3/4 inch X 1 1/2 inch strips of painted wood.

We cut 2X4's into right angles of about 3/4 inch x 3 1/2 inch and aligned them with resin, alon each side of the stringer.

We shaped the leading edges into a flat point and the trailing edges flattened to about 25 degrees.

After sealing and sanding, we covered with single strips of weaved cloth, followed by a layer of chop cloth. We are now working on "straight" lines along the stringers, then cover with finishing cloth and waiting til the rest of the boat gets caught up
