Help needed fitting gland seals on Seastar cylinder

I have gland seals as shown. Does the harder plastic seal (LH top and btm) go inside or outside the O ring?

I have 2x Seastar BA135-7ATM .....HC5313-3 cylinders. Both exactly the same model and part no. But both completely different.

One has a cheap form of seal and (wiper?) in the form of an O ring and a plastic washer which is basically a flat washer scooped out on one face to seal on the O ring.

One end had the plastic washer to the outside and the other end to the inside. ?

I can not find anything in the kit instructions or on the internet that shows me which way they go, any hydraulic people out there who could help thanks.....

Had a better look at the plastic washer and it fits too loosely to be a wiper. So I'm not sure what it is for.

Generally the wiper is on the outside and O Ring the inner,

but here's a very good site that "needs searching"but has a lot of diagrams and instructions if you haven't used prior:SeaStar Solutions

Cheers Steve

Dave,
There's a couple of not bad U TUBE vid's on pulling these apart and rebuilding if you have not viewed, here's one :

But a few more on the same page, may give you some idea's if nothing else, the above one is fairly thorough

Cheers Steve

Re: Help needed fitting gland seals on Seastar cylinder

For some reason they all skip over the install of this particular seal.

A few pages in from your link (thanks) there was a video on rebuilding Yamaha tilt cylinders where he didn't show how to fit them but did refer to them as "back up" rings. A search on back up rings took me to an SKF site where it explained they hold the O ring such that part of the O ring can't be pulled into the clearance gap between the shaft and housing causing accelerated wear.

ANSWER..... They fit on the outside, away from the pressure.

Picture attached.

Thanks for your help.

Yes, the "washer" is actually a back-up ring and shall avoid the protrution of the O-ring into the gap , away from the pressure.

Logic -- isn't it?

Why do you think it is necessary if the shaft to housing clearance is 0.004" and the O ring is 5/32".
