BACKWINDING - I have been sailing and
anchoring in the BVI's for over 20 years. One issue, while not unique to the BVI's, must be considered and that is "backwinding". Since you are looking at an easterly
wind of between 10 - 20 Kts and therefore tend to favor westerly shores for protection from the swells, you need to be concerned as your
boat will not hang east, but will turn west to hang into the apparent
wind as it comes over the top of the island and then is pulled back into the vacuum that it creates. This results in an apparent westerly wind at the surface, which creates the problem of insufficient swinging room and
anchor reversal. Plan for it and do not be surprised. George
