Australian Sailor Missing Boat Adrift Malaysia

I came across a news report of a boat that was adrift off Malaysia. The boat's owner is Australian and missing (presumed lost overboard).

Here is a link to the story, dated December 11.

EXCERPT:
MIRI: A veteran Australian sailor was believed to have drowned when his yacht was found adrift and abandoned within the state’s waters near here this morning. David Lenton, 74, was believed to be heading towards Marina Bay jetty here from his home country. A police spokesman confirmed receiving a missing person's report and that a search and rescue (SAR) mission to locate Lenton has been activated. “So far, there has been no sign or any positive development,” he said, adding that Lenton’s yacht, named, SY Atlantis, was believed to have drifted since last night under rough seas.

Great news!

But that second report leaves a lot to the imagination, love to know the full story of how he ended up there with his boat adrift.

That is great news.. My biggest nightmare is being in the water watching my boat disappear. Excellent that this adventure had a happy ending.

Re: Australian Sailor Missing Boat Adrift Malaysia

I wonder if the boat was actually "adrift" and then ran aground, or if it ran aground directly. In the photo it is clearly grounded, not berthed" and perhaps a "reporter" or the photographer simply used the incorrect word. Either way, it is at the least a semi happy ending, a life not lost, and his boat's damage unknown/undetermined (to us). Maybe there will be a follow up from the captain. The story as it sits is ... odd.

Re: Australian Sailor Missing Boat Adrift Malaysia

just goes to show, never believe everything thing you read in papers
here is the full and correct story.
left Miri on Thursday 8/12 and sailed towards SW with NE winds of 10-15 knots and reasonable conditions, around midnight winds swung around to SW and increased to estimated 20 knots with rising seas deciding to head for Bintulu under motor and wait for better conditions. During morning engine overheated, so turned it off and with still worsening conditions decided to turn back to Miri under sail only, arriving off shore around midday, finding I was past the entrance to small marina, approaching coastal area and not making headway called friend in marina and then anchored in bay off Miri. During evening Coast Guard vessel came and attempted to get line on board but failed due to nasty wave action making all very difficult. During night storm with winds in excess of forty knots parted anchor rode and vessel drifted NNE for about 1.7 nautical miles and beached herself in area north of Miri. At around 3.30 am I went ashore seeing lights nearby hoping to find someone to report to, but found no one. So after retrieving some clothes, my documents and wallets, I walked approx. 10 km into town arriving there at dawn. My friends hired fishing boat to search for me and found the vessel, but not me (reason for lost person report). No real damage to vessel was sustained, but having lots of trouble trying to refloat her at high tide, but we hope to make further attempts shortly
thank you all for your concerns

Mishiwa, thanks so much for clearing the air of all the misinformation that has been floating about. Ann and I hope for an early recovery of your boat and that damages are small.

Good luck,

Jim
