Songs To Sail By

When I was a child, my parents had a Chevy Caprice stationwagon. In the summer, we would take road trips to visit relatives and see sights around the country. Of course, this was back in the day before cars had A/C. Now, when I hear those songs, they transport me back to when I was wedged between my sister and the family dog en route to see Grandma, etc.

Weather-wise, today was a perfect day to conjure images of sailing. However, it was Jimmy Buffett on the radio that made me yearn to be out on the water. I think many associate Jimmy Buffett with sailing, but it made me wonder if anyone had songs/artists that they simply cannot separate from sailing. I'm talking the kind of song that will transport you to your boat regardless of where you are or what you are doing!

We have an Altec-Lansing ipod docking station that we keep on the boat. It also takes 3.5mm aux input.

We have an 8gb ipod and 16gb Blackberry.

We sail to everything. Sometimes mellow, sometimes rock, always entertaining.

Even though I'm an East Coast guy, I spent a lot of time sailing on the Great Lakes and there I learned to love Stan Rogers. NORTHWEST PASSAGE is one of the Great sea songs of all time. At one time, in a survey, Canadians voted it as their next best choice for their National Anthem. My personal favorites are "The Mary Ellen Carter" and "White Squall". His death at a young age was a major loss. The maritime traditions of the Lakes and the Maritimes are a much under-appreciated part of the lore of the sea. I'm a confirmed PArrothead, but for sheer quantity and quality of sea songs, give me Stan every time.

my husband's eyes glaze over and he years for the water when he hears Green Grass and High Tides - apparently written about the Jacksonville, FL area where the marshes are everywhere. Green grass in the salt water marshes. Lots of mud flats when the tides go out.

Dont' forget 'Ride, Captain Ride' by one hit wonders Blues Image, and various Beach Boy songs including 'The Sloop John B' and 'Sail on Sailor', James Taylor and Mark Knoffler's version of 'Sailing to Philadelphia' and Lyle Lovett's 'If I had a Boat'. And for me, just about any roots-style Reggae Song puts me in the right groove when sailing in the tropics.

My sailing colleague loves 'I am sailing' I think it is by Rod Steward. I love the soundtrack from the Big Blue by Eric Serra, surprisingly (not) it goes great with winter climbing in the Alps!

Sorry Gilbo, you may personally dislike his music, but it is inflammatory to those who do not share your opinion to suggest that he is nothing but a talentless hack. Put another way, most of us on this site do not attempt to denigrate the opinions of others in areas that are almost purely subjective and involve taste.

He's not talentless. He's an average musician and a great entertainer that's found his market and does very well with it.

Yup, you should know better than to come around here berating our hero.Kinda remeinds me of the 'Top Gear' tv prog when our boys challenge was to buy some autos in Florida and make their way to Louisianna, and along the way, they wre dared to paint anti american slogans on the cars. Love him all you want, it still doesn't make him good. I'll agree he's found his market and i'm sure does very well for himself, but his songs are still dull. I live in the bvi and have to contend with every bar playing that drivel.
