Amazing rescue of sailboat in CA. Pretty tough little boat.

Re: sailboat survives rocks at Redondo

OUCH.

I don't know that I would call that a "rescue". Looks to me like the boat sailed off the rocks on it's own accord once the main filled and the crew bailed into the water as soon as she cleared the jetty. Hope no one was hurt.

Won't comment on how it ended up on the rocks. Sails look fine but who knows what happened.

Wow. A real nightmare situation. Did the man in the water survive? Details anyone's?

Re: sailboat survives rocks at Redondo

Am I seeing things but wasn't there a guy or two in the water swimming after the boats? The rescue boats were doing nothing for them after the boat sailed itself off the rocks, even motoring away from them?

I think the boat he dived off picked him back up.

Still not sure exactly what went on in the water. Maybe the sail club will have some more news. Turned out good staying with the boat but could have ended up deadly.

The person in the water was a rescue swimmer who jumped from the Fire Department boat at about 2:07 ... presumably to assist if the (very likely to be injured) sailor jumped or ended up in the water if the boat broke up.

At 4:00 A man from the lifeguard boat climbed onto the foredeck where he did something that may have been to attach a tow line (according to the comments on youtube the lifeguard boat did tow them to safety), and then he went back to cockpit to check on the sailor who just seemed to be sitting there, presumably a bit battered and stunned by an adrenaline overdose ... I hope he's as tough as his boat proved to be.

That was hard to watch. Amazing that the rescue swimmer would even try to get near that boat given how thrashed about it was. Glad all made it out - including that tough little vessel!

Whatever agency saved that Boat was amazing, FWC would have watched and issued tickets.
It did seem to save itself, it didn’t seem to be towed, it seems to be moving and the tow boat not, unless there was a winch, I’m not sure how that could happen?

Yeah, that Boat was built before they “knew”how to build fiberglass boats don’t you think? Bet his hull doesn’t flex in rough water.

Yes would love to know what kind of boat that was.

I believe it is an S2 7.3. I haven't sailed one, but I understand the keel on S2s is molded into the hull. I looked at the larger version of the video and it appears the boat sailed itself off the rocks. Sure glad everyone is ok.
S2 7.3 sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com

http://impliedconsent.us/S2_History.html
https://www.practical-sailor.com/rev....2-1236-1.html

"The lead ballast is internal. S2 did a good job of embedding and sealing the lead in the keel cavity, so leaking should be minimal even in a hard grounding.
The hull is a conservative hand-laid laminate"

As groundings go, that's about as hard as they get.
