have boat on west coast another on east coast ?

Thanks to all.

I think my wife will not approve but I am thinking of getting a small 28 feet sailboat to keep on the east coast maybe florida.

My idea is to have a boat I can visit 2 - 3 months a year to cruise the bahamas and also to stay while in florida. Also to cruise up and down the
east coast.

I was thinking of 10,000 for the boat and 10,000 to fix it up.

A budget of 400 a month for a wet slip.

I am probably being unrealistic.

What is your opinion ?

Thanks to all,

archie

If you have DIY skills and are not looking for a fancy, expensive boat then the purchase/maintenance budget is very possible.

For the size boat if you are looking for a non-liveaboard slip then that budget is very possible. May not find a slip close to an inlet or harbor and may have to look farther north but you might even find a slip at that price in South Florida for a smaller boat.

Re: have boat on west coast another on east coast ?

if i were rich n famous and had all the money in the world i would keep a formosa 41(deep draft) in southwest coastal mexico and a freeport islander (shallower draft) in grenada or somewhere canes donot like to frequent.
is a great idea.
for 10k you can get a good project.
for repair--amount of outflow depends on not only point of view but skillz level and location and willingness to pay.
donot buy something you cannot fix in 3-5 yrs with minimal physical assistance.
do accompany the surveyor as he surveys the boat.
remember--most fails are due to project being larger than imagined and skillz being less than thought.
oh yeah-- keep eyes on the prize. after your project is completed, you will be doing it all again in a different locale.
is this prize really worth the effort to you ?
donot kid self--refitting boats aint light work, unless you only redo brightwork and call it good.
most of your money will go into rig and propulsion. oh yes and hull maintenance(thru hull fittings and hardware)
toys and safety items are not included.

Re: have boat on west coast another on east coast ?

I have toyed with the idea myself.
By a relatively cheep, good enough boat in Florida or similar sail in Caribbean, then flog.

I think budget would be near 20 or 25K for a comfortable and sailable boat without to much work
The killer is the moorage cost.

Paying out 400 a month to keep a crap boat. Just doesn't add up right almost half the value of the boat per year.
