Boat Storage in Texas?

We are considering to sail to texas in about six months from the windward islands and would like to solicit some advice on where to store our boat for a couple of years. Any advice would be appreciated.
Boat is 46' with a 6' draft.

Re: Boat Storage in Texas?

Also around the Port Aransas/Rockport area (in Cove Harbor) are House of Boats and the Hooking Bull. House of Boats is very well known as a DIYer friendly yard. Great folks there.

Re: Boat Storage in Texas?

There are several marinas in Kemah, Texas around Clear Lake that can haul and store your boat. Chuck

Re: Boat Storage in Texas?

The OP is from out of state, probably out of country. Could you list them? Google shows no boats out in the yard except the one I listed. Plus I wont be near Kemah before Thanksgiving.

Re: Boat Storage in Texas?

For long term storage, the yards in kemah would cost a fortune. Kemah boat storage is an interesting little mishmash of boats, and I'm not quite sure how they cram boats in there or move them around.

Re: Boat Storage in Texas?

We lived on board in Kemah for two years. Didn't find the costs higher that most other places and certainly less than south Florida where we are now. There is a haul out yard at Seabrook Shipyard where long term storage can be had. There is also one at Watergate, but they may not do long term storage. I do believe both yards are owned by the same people. There is also Clear Lake Marine Center and Pier 77 in Galveston. Chuck

Re: Boat Storage in Texas?

None of the yards have facilities for long term storage. Seabrook Shipyard and South Texas yacht service are both cramped for space, as is Clear lake marine center. Pier 77 or Payco have the most room, but then you're storing your boat on a barrier island more or less in the path of the next storm.

Re: Boat Storage in Texas?

Cross post from Cruiser network online, just to keep everything in one place:

This surveyor is the only one I can recommend. He has done several surveys for me in the last 20 years.

R. L. "Dick" Frenzel, NAMS - Certified Marine Surveyor
dick@dixielandmarine.com
281-330-9966

The only 2 yard son the Texas Gulf coast I will recommend are:

Galveston: Payco Marina. Great folks there. DIY approved. (409) 744-7428

Rockport: Hooking Bull Boatyard, quite secure and DIY approved. (361) 729-5527

I have used both and have never had any problems. But I actually prefer Hooking Bull as it is very secure and about 2 miles from my home. Last May I launched my boat after 2 years of work from Hooking Bull.

Re: Boat Storage in Texas?

I have a good friend who had a bad experience with Hooking Bull: He had them pull and paint his bottom. Because they were so busy, they didn't get his bottom done on time, and then had the cajones to charge him a daily fee for storage for the extra days! So, they missed their own deadline, and charged the customer because of it. It wasn't a lot of money, but it's the principle.

As to the aforementioned surveyor. The only surveyor I'D use in the area is Mike Firestone. You are the first person I've ever seen online (or in person), other than a boat broker ("good" has a different meaning to brokers), that wouldn't recommend Mike -you said the ONLY one you would recommend is Dick. How come?

Re: Boat Storage in Texas?

Rico:
I have lived in Kemah and Seabrook for 20+ years. Our boat is St Martin right now. First, I think you are crazy for bringing it back but I understand situations change...
There is a dive of a boat yard in Dickinson off Dickinson Bayou. You will be able to get 6' in there (you may need to watch the tide but I don't think so.
It is named Hillman Marine (281)339-1546). Mostly shrimpers but some sailboats and motor vessels. Lot's of do it yourself work. I think it will be reasonable in cost. Certainly less that the marinas/yards around Kemah and Seabrook.
