Have to wonder what they were doing 300 miles out into the North Atlantic at the end of December

looks like this is it:
https://share.delorme.com/LindaFletcher

They headed out of Beaufort, NC, towards the Carib, drifted around for a while, picked up by the freighter, which then headed for Wilmington, Delaware.

I added a screenshot in case the page above disappears.

Been back through Windyty and the weather didn't look too bad since Christmas day.

4 People, Dog Rescued 290 Miles Off Savannah

There are two photos here. On the first we can see that they have the head sail completely unfurled. Odd in a damaged mast. I thought the problem was that, that they could not furl the genoa neither take it down but in the 2nd photo we can see that they furled the sail????

Also on the first photo it seems there is very little wind. I wonder why the reason for the rescue? I don't see anything that poses an imediata danger to life. They got bad weather and a storm at 29 and 30 of January and that explains the erratic course but since 31 to 3 January they had a window of good weather. Maybe they had no way to receive weather information?

But then why on this time of the year going not coastal but offshore? The bad weather was clearly predicted:

I'm betting there is not much wrong with that boat.

Yep. Crew failure, rather than equipment or boat failure.

Re: 4 People, Dog Rescued 290 miles off Savannah

Bit of a mystery. Can't quite figure out what's going on from their track and what happened when. Looks like they were headed for the BVIs from the track (head east to Bermuda then curl south). Even early on in their track there are tracker reports with them going 3 knots. All I know is that if I were doing that trip on that boat at this time of year, if I was not making 5 knots under sail I'd have the engine kicked on.

In any event it's a shame. From their Facebook page they've clearly been planning and preparing for this trip for quite some time. Who knows how much experience they have, and who knows what actually failed. I've gone up the mast offshore and it's no picnic, and I'm guessing I'm 20 years younger than that guy.

Certainly looks like they could have proceeded under sail, minorly jerry-rigged or not, but who's to say, we weren't there. I hate jumping to conclusions based on amateur forensic sleuthing of a few pictures and a track.

Isn't the tracker showing their track after the rescue? So in the freighter? I'd wager they picked a poor weather window to cross the gulf stream, had issues and looks like they gave up and wanted to head back then was picked up.
