Chinese made sails......

Does any member have recent experience with using China manufactured sails on their cruising yacht?

Re: Chinese made sails......

All Neil Pryde sails are manufactured in China and the Philippines.
Used them for 15 years on my 50 ft ketch. When I sold the boat the sails were still in excellent shape. Had many ocean miles from Maine to Florida and could not say anything bad about the sails or service. When I purchased my current boat which is a 44 ft cat I also went to Neil Pryde for a complete set of sails and in 6 years they have taken me up and down the east coast and throughout the Caribbean. No regrets and the sails still look great. Prior to owning "sails manufactured in China" I have purchased sails from North and Quantum for numerous boats and I must say I have absolutely no complaints regarding sails made in China.

I just recently got a new mainsail from Rolly Tasker sails and are very happy with it.
The price and service was very good.
Cheers

Re: Chinese made sails......

I did a lot of research before finally buying my new sail wardrobe from Rolley Tasker. It surprised me to find that some of the big-name sail manufacturers buy their sails directly from the far east. The makers even supply the new sails with the Western company's logo already stitched on.

Re: Chinese made sails......

We have purchased a 120% Genoa, about 65 sqm from Far East.
Good service, reliable delivery.
Quality ok but certainly kind of low cost. No extras: few re-inforcements etc.

Ordering again? Why not?
However next time I would order more reinforcement extras and a bit stronger fabric. And may be a bit smaller: Ours was a bit longer than I expected and its, I think, easier to live with a sail which is a bit smaller than expected.

Re: Chinese made sails......

I have had several sails from Rolly Tasker and China Sail Factory, as well as one from Far East. The RT and CSF sails are built very well, the Far East, not so much. The reality is that it is getting harder to find sails made in local lofts. Most of the big names are using RT, CSF or others. Ullman sails are made in South Africa, I believe North has a loft in Sri Lanka?

Another vote for Rolly Tasker. Last two sails a 115% Ginny and a cruising chute came from them. Solid sails, good performance and very well built. I was worried about the cut/shape and couldn't be happier. We go to weather, like a scalded dog with her ears pinned back.

Re: Chinese made sails......

I've had sails made by an Eastern European manufacturer and I'm not so happy with them. Mainly due to the "sailmaker" (read: representative) of the east European factory. The quality is great but the fit is not so.

My advise is (goes for "made in PRC as well): KNOW WHAT YOU WANT if you go with a low labor sailmaker. What you ask and pay for is what you'll get. DO NOT go for the advice and/or measurements of a "dealer". Do measurements yourself. Read in. study. That's where they save the costs.

Lee sails are a layed out DIY platform. Good luck

I have personal experience with Lee Sails in Hong Kong. I purchased Genoa main mizzen and staysail and spray covers for my rails. Very pleased with the quality of the work particularly the hand stitching around head, clew, tack and bolt ropes.

We priced Chinese Dacron sails three years ago and found them to be the same price as high quality European sail loft products after shipping costs were factored in. So we chose high quality UK DYS laminate sails over the cheap Chinese Dacron product.

Don't assume because it's Chinese that it's cheaper, it pays to shop around.
