I don't think it is too much for an experienced crew to ask the owner pay for food on board. The crew needs to work like a dog 24/7 and can't even for a free meal in return !!!! I would never treat my crew this way.

One can feed a crew very well for less than 10 dollars a day easy.

I agree, and I believe this is to filter certain folk. I've never crewed for an unknown captain, so have no experience to back this up. My guess is that this is not enforced.

Re: Grenada to Panama

Agree with posts above, that is almost unheard of to not even provide food/drink etc.

Re: Grenada to Panama

I have 17 deliveries under my belt mostly 8+ days and most with repeat captains. As a volunteer, as if you were interested in developing your skills under an excellent captain and you had zero or limited open ocean experience you can imagine the risk that the captain is taking. You could prove to be unable to perform responsibly or safely 75 miles off shore. You could be someone that does not work well with others. All of these and more are risks that are borne by the captain.

On the other side of the equation, I can only tell you that delivering a boat is work. Think of it as if you were driving a tractor across the United States or Australia and never stopping! Slow and with some level of risk. And then imagine that you have some experience but not enough to be a seasoned hand, and the Captain is critiquing you for wanting to eat a fish that you just caught or eating too much of your ration that you bought after 8 days at sea and 2 bad storm days and nights.

So, the normal practice is for the Captain or boat owner to pay for food, and good food. It is also common practice in about 50% of the time for very inexperienced hands to receive reasonable to and from transportation. For those with experience, you do get all transport including taxis, bus, ferry, plane trips etc. If the guy says no when you are interviewing him/her, make it a sign that you can get your experience somewhere else.
