Re: Cape Dory28 re-power

It depends on how much work you’ll do yourself, labor rate for the mechanic, what else you might need or have done at the same time, if any modifications will need to be done, etc.

We put a new Beta 16 in our Bristol 29.9 last winter and the engine alone was over $9,300. We were ok with it because this is our last boat and we knew we would be cruising full-time on her. If this isn’t your last boat, you may want to keep looking for a different one.

Try posting your question on the Cape Dory forum. Lots of owners have repowered over the years. Including me, back in ‘07.

Re: Cape Dory28 re-power

From a financial standpoint, much better to buy a boat that already has a newer engine. Nothing at all special about Cape Dorys excepting the fairly unique look.
